inserting picture-word 97

B

Buddy Meister

I'm running msoffice 97 on windows xp media.

When I try to insert a picture into a document three things happen that I've
never seen before.

1. the "insert picture browser window will not show thumbnails.
2. when I choose a pic and click insert, a convert file window pops up with
a list of formats to choose from. Never saw this before.
3. No matter which format I select, an error window appears "an error
occurred when importing this file".

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Buddy,
Start by re-registering the Gallery. Find ARTGALRY.EXE, double click the file.
It is in a folder similar to this:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ARTGALRY

If you can open the Gallery, right-click any picture in the catalogue, click
recover.

The Clip Gallery has its own help file, there are other troubleshooting steps
you can try.

Could be your graphic filter(s) is broken. Rename the .wmf filter first, see if
that makes a difference.

The filters are in a file similar to this
C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\Grphflt

Rename WMFIMP32.FLT to WMFIMP32.old. Drag a new instance of this file from your
setup disk into the same folder.

You can drag the CAG.exe icon to the desktop and make a shortcut. You cannot
insert from it but you can drag and drop

The CAG.exe icon is in a folder similar to this
C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ARTGALRY

Hi Mary,
I tried the first two suggestions you gave with no change. Let me add to my
description. I should have mentioned that I could insert clip art. The
problem lies in trying to insert photos that I have taken and downloaded onto
my computer.
I recently bought this computer and this was the first time I tried this
function on this computer. I have used word on several computers for many
years inserting pics, but this is the first time I've run into this problem.
I'm wondering if old ms office products don't work on newer ms os.

Does this info change what I need to do.

Thanks,

Buddy

I don't know what to tell you. Can you drag and drop? Did you try to re-install
the filters?
What version Windows are you using? Is your video driver current?

I can not drag & drop. I get a box with the file name only. The Computer is
only a few months old/new, and came with windows xp media and a 950 intel
media graphics accelerator. At this point I have not tried to reinstall any
filters because it didn't come a setup disk. I'm wondering if this problem
is the computer or because I installed my ms office 97 on it.

I have reregistered the artgalry.exe.
Reinstalled the graficfilter from my msoffice 97 disk,
and downloaded udates for office 97.

I can insert grafics from the clip art gallery,
insert jpg photos from the sample folders,
But I can not insert any photos I have downloaded onto
my computer... not even drag and drop them into the word document.

I'm hoping you have an idea because being a surface user, it is
quite the puzzle for me.

Mary, I wanted to mention also that after downloading the updates for msoff97
to the desk top, how do I know they are integrated into the running of the
programs?

I cannot remember how the updates work in Office 97. What happens when you
double-click the file on your desktop?

I have Publisher 97 on my computer and I can insert .jpg without any problems.

Do you have Norton? Disable the Office plug-in if you do.

From where are you downloading the images? What happens if you include them in
the clip gallery? Can you insert the images now?

Well I have run the update for MS Off 97 -no change
The Office plug-in on Norton is off but does not apply to anything older
than 2000
I put photos into the sample pics folder that come with MS office, but they
still won't insert. (all sample photos will insert)
My pics are in a folder I created on my drive. Nothing abnormal about that.
I've had computers with windows 98, NT-4, 2000 pro and now XP media, and
never had a problem like this before....

sliding the down the "plug & play graphic media accelerator" to a slower rate
didn't seem to change anything except to make my screen look blurry.

Before I mess with the chip set, I'm remembering that when I played a dvd,
the vidio jumps from time to time. Would this confirm a corruption with the
video drivers?
