Inserting pictures in MS Word - tips please!

T

I am a somewhat reluctant convert to Office 2007 - mainly because it's
my company's de facto standard I have to use it.

Leaving aside all issues of the UI which is purely a matter of taste,
I can't help feeling that the process of inserting and arranging
pictures/images and captions has taken a HUGE step backwards. It
seems almost impossible to do what was perfectly simple in previous
versions of Word - if I grab the picture and try to move it Word
decides for me where it thinks it ought to go (I have Text Wrapping
set to Top and Bottom). I used to be able to select the picture and
move it using the Up and Down arrow keys, but not any more.

Is it just me and my incomplete understanding of how this is supposed
to work, or is it, in fact, a crock?

Thanks

Edward

Works just fine here, so it must be something you are doing. Plunk the
image on the page and drive it around with the arrrow keys or drag and
drop with the mouse.

I can't move pics in W2007 either, they go where they want which is
infuriating. Is it because we have a non-professional version? You can drive
them around crudely with typing but I've not yet found out how to fix pic N
to point x,y on page p (which seems a simple thing to want to do).

To move pictures freely, you must set the text wrapping to something other
than In Line With Text. Then you can used the Advanced Layout settings
(Format | Object | Layout | Advanced) to specify the position.

My workaround for this particular disaster:

Create a text box and insert the picture in it.

You can drag the text box containing the picture
anywhere you want.

Good luck.

Placement of text boxes is exactly the same as placement of wrapped
graphics. Putting an image in a text box does nothing except add a layer of
complexity--unless you want to include some text with the picture in the
box.
