Inserting pictures in MS Word

1) How can I insert multiple pictures (.bmp of .JPG) format in a blank page
of MS Word and have the ability to move them around, position them, resize
them etc?

2) Is there a recommended way to add captions below the pohotos?

Or should I give up on MS Word and try to accomplish the task in PowerPoint?

I would probably use PowerPoint, but try making sure the pictures
(double-click them) are "In front of text" or "behind text"...anything but
"Inline with text", and use the Alt key to move them around JUST where you
want them.

I am trying to first insert 6 pictures in two rows, 3 on a row, on a blank
page, then add text under each picture. MS Word really limits the placements;
maybe I should stick with PowerPoint?

If I were trying to do this with Word, I would insert a 4-row, 3-column
table. Insert the pictures into rows 1 and 3 and type the captions in row 2
and 4, and turn the borders off.
Whether you use Word or PPT is strictly a matter of preference, I think.
