Inserting Projects via FTP Site

I currently manage a project on a local server but need to share with
colleagues in other organisations. I have copied my project onto a shared FTP
site and my colleague's programme is also there. My project can be opened and
reviewed by others with access to the FTP Site and I can review theirs also.
However, I now need to insert both of these projects into a consolidated
master programme such that I can identify and show links and dependencies
across the programmes - on the FTP Site - so it will remain visible and allow
changes by other parties to the inserted programmes (which will automatically
adjust the consolidated master programme).
Within MSProject (2007 SP2) I can get as far as insert>project then select
the relevant FTP Location. However, when I attempt to insert (linked to
project) either of the .mpp files on the FTP Site MSProject returns a
message: 'You cannot enter an internet address here. Enter a path that points
to a location on your computer or on the network'.
Is there a way that I can insert these projects and create dependencies
between them via the FTP Site?
If not, are there any other sensible and easily achievable suggestions as to
how I can do this (bearing in mind that our company servers are commercially
discrete and unlinked)?
Any assistance gratefully received!
Kind regards
Peter

It's been a while since I used FTP and I also have no way to test this
idea. Idea: can you find a way to map the FTP drive to a drive:\share
and then open the file in project by specificing that?
