Inserting rows into repeating table

I'm trying to create a repeating table of links in my form. I want the user
to be able to add these links. My initial idea was to have a text field
where the user could write out the link and click an "Add Link" button. This
would put the text string into a new field designated as Hyperlink type and
repeating. Then use a repeating table to display the links.

Unfortunately I can't get this to work. Is this something I can do with
rules or are we talking backend javascript? If were talking backend, does
anyone have an example or can point me to a self help section.
