I work with a fairly large Documentation repository where documents are used
in different formats by each of several different groups. The problem I am
having is that some of the data is needed in multiple documents, and when the
data in the “Source†document is updated, it needs to be updated in each of
the documents.
So, what I’m looking for is a way to “Mark†or “Tag†selected text in one
document and include that text in another document. Something that would
also be nice to have is for that “Inserted†text to match the section
formatting specified in the current document (the one that the data is
inserted into). This requirement is by no means as important as just getting
the selected data into another document though.
Now, because the written word can be interrupted in so many ways here is an
examples of what I mean:
1. Document 1 contains this data:
The first step is to log onto the device. Doing so requires that you
know what
device type you will be logging on to. The steps below outline this:
Look at the alarms Device type, and if it equals:
Next you will need to know what command to execute, this is determined
by
the alarms Text field as follows:
2. Document 2 contains this data:
Logging onto a device in the network is performed using the following
steps:
First determine the type of device you will be logging into. Then
use the
steps below to log into the device.
Nortel
Blah blah blah
Alcatel
Blah blah blah
...
Because each device vendor uses a different set of allowable
commands I
will outline all the commands that can be executed by Device type:
Nortel
Blah blah blah
Alcatel
Blah blah blah
...
What I want to be able to do is “Mark†or “Tag†the first section of
Document 2 starting with Nortel and ending with Alcatel, name or somehow
define that section, then Mark and name the second section that starts with
Nortel and ends with Alcatel and name it something and then have either of
those named sections “Included†in Document 1 at a point in the document
specified by another "Mark" or "Tag" and have it inserted or included when
Document 1 is opened. This way, any changes made to the “Marked†or “Taggedâ€
data in Document 2 is always the latest version “Inserted†into Document 1.
I envision it working much like a #include in C, except it is included in an
exact spot, and we are just including a "Marked" or "Tagged" section, which
could conceivably be the entire document.
So, my question is, in Word 2003 is there a "Built-In" way of doing this, or
does Microsoft have a Macro for this? If the answer to those questions is
no, is there a good Microsoft document I can read on how I might do this?
