Inserting TOC in Notebook View

D

Donovan Dillon

Here's a tip for anyone trying to figure out how to insert a Table Of
Content into Word 2004 for Mac in Notebook View:

1. Create your document in Notebook View -- outline the document using
Numbers/Letters as required

2. Save your document and create a working version in case Word decides
to misbehave.

3. Change your document view from Notebook Layout to Normal (View menu)

4. Create a space before the first line of text in your document and
place your cursor there

5. Click Insert->Index and Tables

6. Select the number of levels you want to show in your TOC

7. Click Options

8. Scroll down until you see 'Note Level 1, 2, 3, ...' in the
"Available Styles" window

9. Enter '1 - 9' in the "TOC Level" fields corresponding to 'Note Level
1 - 9' and click "OK"

10. Click "OK" to close the Index and Styles dialogue box and insert your TOC

11. Now change your view back to Notebook Layout and viola! you now
have a neat TOC in Notebook view!!!

Make sure you save the document. I just figured this out after
googling for ages and not finding any clear indication that this was
possible or how to do it if it were. So far I have not noticed any
un-intended side effects, but YMMV. Hope this helps.

Beth, before you think about an article, some general questions--

1) If one is willing to switch from Notebook Layout into Normal View, is
there anything you can't do to a notebook document?

2) Switching from Normal View to Notebook gives you a nasty little
message, but Notebook to Normal doesn't seem to change the document. Is
that right?

That is, I'm thinking it may be a general principle that IF you are
willing to switch into Normal or Page Layout view temporarily, you can
do anything to a Notebook document that you can to a regular document.
But I'm not sure.

Hi Donovan,

Thanks! Since you're obviously a heavy Notebook user, have you got any
comments on Daiya's points?

Beth
