Inserting white space

M

Michael A

I was wondering if anyone else had this problem.
I have a tablet PC and I am using Onenote service pack 2.
The problem:
With a page of entirely hand-written notes, when I want to insert space it
very often does not move everything below the insertion point, with that
result that handwriting overlays other handwriting and the page below the
insertiion point generally becomes messed up. This seems to be especially
true when there is handwriting off-screen (i.e. the page is too long to fit
on the screen--my pages of notes tend to be reasonably long).

Michael, which Tablet PC are you on, and are you using OneNote service pack
1 with the XP SP2 and Tablet PC Edition 2005 installed? What pen drivers
are you using? I have no issue inserting additional space (or removing it)
on Ink pages.

Hi Chris.
Thanks for responding.
I am using an LG tablet PC with OneNote service pack 1 and XP SP2 Tablet PC
Edition 2005 installed. I have the pen which came with the unit (penabled, I
think).

I don't know what pen driver I am using (not sure how to check)

Hi Chris.

Just able to check the driver.
Wacom Serial Pen Tablet
Driver provider: Microsoft
date 7/1/2001
version 5.1.2600.2180

Do you happen to be using "containers" for your writing? I believe I've
noticed this type of non-function where text may be contained on one portion
of the page, and I've tried to insert more writing space, but it doesn't go
through horizontally. Take a look in Tools/Options/Display and see if there
is a check mark in "Show note containers on pages."

Mike, the way to check which driver your Tablet is using is by
right-clicking My Computer, selecting Properties and then going to the
Hardware tab. On there, you'll see Device Manager, so tap that button.
When that opens, tap the + sign next to Human Interface Devices so it
expands the listing. If your machine uses the Wacom drivers, you should
have a listing like "Wacom Penabled HID MiniDriver." Otherwise, you may not
be using that system.

If you are using the Wacom, I would suggest downloading and installing the
latest 4.82-9a driver from here: http://www.wacom.com/tabletpc/driver.cfm
Either way, when inserting writing space between your OneNote entries, make
sure you're (1) away from the left edge of your "paper," (2) you're seeing a
black horizontal bar with a down arrow centered under it, (3) you have a
clear horizontal space from both left and right margins, and (4) you slowly
drag it downward to expand the space.

pmfji, but I wonder if I can use the driver you
recommend. I have a Toshiba Portege 3500 and Device
Manager says I've got a Wacom serial pen tablet (nothing
about Penabled.) Driver is from Microsoft 7/1/2001,
version 5.1.2600.2180. Do you know if I could use the
driver you recommend from Wacom, and if it would be an
advantage to do so?

Thanks,

Elbert

You should be able to use the latest 4.82-9a driver from here:
http://www.wacom.com/tabletpc/driver.cfm from Wacom just fine. Download and
install it. The advantage? It has been rewritten by Wacom so it works
better. And while you're at it, please check the Toshiba web site for
possible updates on your 3500, too.

Thanks, Chris. I was up to date on the Toshiba stuff,
but I downloaded the Wacom driver and it works. I wasn't
having any problem, but the new driver seems to make the
pen work more smoothly--it's hard to say what the
difference is exactly, it just seems a bit more like a
pen.

Thanks for your help,

Elbert

That's about the same experience I've had, Elbert. BTW - We have a Tablet
PC-specific newsgroup, microsoft.public.windows.tabletpc, if you have any
questions about your Tablet. I see you're using the web-based newsgroup
interface, but would suggest you use a regular newsreader program (like
Outlook Express, since it is included with Windows XP) and simply set up a
News account using msnews.microsoft.com as the news server.

After you start the account you will be able to access - for FREE, no
sign-in, no password - any and all the Microsoft newsgroups, and subscribe
to any you wish. This will give you the advantage of being able to view
only unread messages, track your own posts, mark threads of interest with
different colors, and lots of other things. Anyone can use Microsoft's
server, no matter your Internet Service Provider.

Thanks Chris for your suggestions.

I did have show ink containers checked, I unchecked it, but still have the
same problem (although the horizontal line for inserting space did change to
just the width of the text and not the entire page as before, and it does
seem to treat handwriting better (i.e. each line as independent).

So, I will try downloading the updated driver from Wacom (so far I just get
a page cannot be displayed, but from the discussion thread it seems there is
probably something wrong with the settings on my work machine). Hopefully
that will work. I will also check for an updated display driver.

If you're still interested in this long conversation:

For comparison, I downloaded a trial version of GoBinder.
The problem does not occur in that program--diagrams, highlighting, and
handwritten text all moves down (or up) appropriately (including off page,
not visible stuff).

I now have installed the new WACOM driver. So I'm up to date on drivers and
service packs.

Still the problem persists (actually select all from the menu doesn't select
all either).
in OneNote but not in GoBinder.

It would seem that there is a problem in OneNote itself.

thanks for the suggestion, I didn't know about repair.

Anyway, I repaired OneNote and shutdown and rebooted.
I tried select all and it actually selected everything on the page (for the
first time).

I tried inserting white space again and it didn't work (same result as usual).
After that, select all no longer worked (simply selects the first
handwritten text line)

I guess I am out of luck and need to look at Go Binder.

Hi Chris.

Yes, I am using the tool correctly. It does show the lines and the arrow
when 'expanding' the space and it does move some of the handwriting, but it
does not move all of it (in fact a lot of it). I don't really see any
consistent pattern in what it will move and what it wont.

Highlighting (with the appropriate pen highlighter) also doesn't move with
the handwriting.

I suppose I could try a complete re-install with re-installation of the
service pack as well and see if that works.

In using OneNote I literally do everything in handwriting so adding white
space is critical. It seems strange since GoBinder works flawlessly.

That would be my next suggestion, Mike. What you're seeing is definitely
not normal behavior. I would copy your files out of the C:\Documents and
Settings\{UserName}\My Documents\My Notebook folder and tuck them away
safely somewhere else before you uninstall/reinstall, just to be safe.
