inserting words

I have word 2002. I am trying to insert a new word in my
typed document. When I click the space before the word I
want to add to and begin typing, in starts to replace the
word I want to keep with the word I want to add. This
does not happen to all of my documents. What am I doing
wrong.

Do you have OVR displayed in the status bar at the bottom of your screen?
Toggle it off with the mouse.

FYI -- what likely happened is at somepoint in an effort to hit DELETE or
HOME over in the 6-key-pad to the right of the main section of the
keyboard -- you inadvertantly hit INSERT -- which toggles ON and OFF the
OVERSTRIKE MODE.

Easy to do without realizing... and frustrating as all get out until you
figure out what is going on!
