How can I insert a "X" or check box in a cell without using the text box? Thank you

Well, no graphic content can't be inserted *in* cells. However, you can
create checkboxes *on* the sheet by using the tool from the Forms toolbar.

Look in the apple symbol font. Click on the character palette (the flag in
the upper right end of the menu bar) then select miscellaneous.
