Instal office 2008 SP1 update(12.1.0)on iMac

book collector

I have tried installing this update many times, at one point I get this
message "SELECT A DESTINATION ( I select MACINTOSH HD 232GB [209GB free) and
it reads as follows "You can't install office 2008 SP1 update (12.1.0) on
this volume. A version of the software required to install this up date was
not found on this volume"
I HAVE ALSO TRIED TO INSTALL IT ON THE OTHER CHOICE, MY EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE
WHICH HAS 401 GB FREE, AND GET THE SAME RESULT.

How do I get beyond this point and install the up date?

You may want to use the link below to also post this in the Office:mac discussion group. I'm assuming you already have Office:mac
2008 installed (http://mactopia.com) and it's functioning correctly before trying to apply the Service Pack 1 (SP1) update to it.
