Install and Uninstall Error Messages

rRecently I have been getting a ton of Error messages regarding 'another
installation is in progress...please complete etc etc before continuing this
one' OR 'complete the current uninstallation before starting a new one', etc.
95% of the time I don't know what installation or uninstallation is being
referred to...this will happen even if I restore the computer to 2 weeks
earlier. My question is 'Is there a location on the computer where
installations or uninstallations past and present are logged so that I can
'complete' or 'discontinue' any activity and 'clear the decks' so to speak so
that I can start fresh? At this point my computer is paralyzed by these
messages preventing me from installing (or uninstalling) ANYTHING. Any
suggestions would be appreciated.

Do this error message appears for all the applications that you're trying to
install or for only a particular application?
