Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: Exchange

I just downloaded Entourage from our hosted exchange provider Intermedia and tried to install and run. During the install process, my existing version of MS Office 2008 Student Teacher was not found and now trying to run Entourage, I get a "This identity cannot be opened with this version of Entourage" In addition, I can no longer run any MS Office App since it crashes on startup.

Anything I can do besides uninstalling and reinstalling everything? Shouldn't the installer pick up problems and warn me before breaking everything?

Are you using a standalone version of Entourage with exchange with a home &
student version?

Install Standalone version of Entourage from Exchange Email Provider with
the Home & Student Version

"This Identity Cannot Be Opened With This Version of Entourage"
This message usually means, for example, any Identity saved with a 12.1.0 or
later version will not open in 12.0.0 or 12.0.1. Since there was a database
format change in 12.1.0 (SP1), Entourage 12.0.0 or 12.0.1 cannot open a
database saved in the later version.

Once you upgrade, the Identity will open.

If you have a backup copy of your Office folder, you can simply revert to it
by copying back if you have problems with the real update.

Thanks Diane,

Unfortunately, the installer for the upgrade (going through the "Check for Updates" process from MS Office 2008) cannot find any installed version of office. Which is strange because the Office 2008 uninstaller CAN find my installation.

I know there is a work-around for the installer bug, but haven't spent the time going through this. I really have not done anything custom on my machine - I'm really surprised I can't install updates. I might just have to spend the time uninstalling and reinstalling.

Diane,

Sorry I didn't read through the whole post. You are right, I am trying a stand-alone version from my Exchange provider on Office 2008 Home and Student edition.

Your provided link may fix my issue - it should have been what I did before I tried the standard install of the stand-alone version of Entourage.

I'll see if it works. I am not sure what to do otherwise.

installation.

It could be the unorthodox way the standalone Entourage install looks to the
installer.

Follow these steps to reinstall: (no need to use "Remove Office")

* Launch the Microsoft Autoupdater (MAU).To launch MAU, you can open any
Office application and select "Check for Updates" under Help in the Menu
bar. Once MAU is launched, select "Keep in Dock"
* Quit all Microsoft applications (Easy way: log out/in with Shift key down
to disable any startup items.) Be sure all applications are quit before
running updater. IMPORTANT
* Drag the Microsoft Office 2008 folder to the Trash.
* Empty Trash.
* Reinstall Office 2008 from your original installation disk.
* Restart
* Update to 12.1.0 (if you have a newer DVD you might only need the 12.17)
* Restart (restarting before you launch any app is important!)
* Update to 12.1.7
* Restart

Verify that this is 2.2.0 after the 12.1.0 update.
/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0

The only wrinkle for you is the special version of Entourage Exchange you
are using.

Okay - so I'm back where I started before trying to install the stand-alone version of Entourage. I was able to use the work-around and update to 12.1.5. Now my office apps work but I need a version of Entourage with Exchange support which my service provider makes available for free.

Is there a way I can use the stand-alone version with my office 2008 Student Home edition? I read the instructions you sent in the link in a previous post and it seems to indicate uninstalling my current version then reinstalling the full version of office. In that case I wouldn't need the version from my Exchange provider.

I'm confused.

You need to re-read the directions. You need to install from your home &
student version then install your standalone version over it. Update to
12.1.0 and 12.1.7. Be sure to make a backup copy after you get it running.

Since I've never done this we have to rely on the user that provided the
directions.

I'm having the same issue and the instructions don't work. I install
Office then the stand alone exchange. However, it then won't let me
update office to 12.1 b/c the exchange installation did something to
it and it says I don't have the right version.
