I have always used my microsoft word on my laptop with no problem. Now
when I try to pull up word it gives me a message that reads "this
installation of microsoft office X exceeds the number of installatins
permitted by the license agreement?

HELP?

That usually means there is another machine on your local network
running Office with the same serial number.

It is not totally evil. It means a user can have it on lappy and
desktop as long as he's not using it on both at once.

Disconnect yourself from the network (airport off and ethernet cable
unplugged). Then see if Word will start up.

If it does, then look around for machines nearby that could be running
your copy of Office.

If there are none, or it keeps whining when you are off the local
network, ask again. I think it might involve a removal and
reinstallation of Office, but there might be faster way.

It used to be OK to run say Word on one machine and Excel in another
using the same licence, but since Office:Mac (maybe earlier?) you can
only run the Office applications on one Mac at a time.

Disconnecting from the network is a good trick... until you need to
print to a networked printer! :)

Yep. One way of pushing a little further at the limits of the licence
is to prepare all your printing as PDF, then quit all your office
applications before turning airport on.

You do know that you would be a *very* naughty boy by so doing. If you
were using the product as intended, and you were not Rick Wakeman, then
the simpler method would be to quit your Office apps on the other
machine.

If you need to use two copies simultaneously, you need two licences.

If you are entitled to a Student and Teacher's licence, you get THREE
licences in the pack (three individual product keys).

Typically, the problem occurs because people get a new computer and copy the
software from old to new. If they do not then uninstall Office from the old
computer, it will produce the error because the notifications daemon which
is a background part of Office is running whenever the operating system is
running.

Run the Remove Office tool on the old machine to clean it up and you'll be
good to go.

Cheers
