Install of Outlook 2003 on XP

J

Jerrold

Has anybody else had a problem with installing Office 2003
on Windows XP and not getting an icon on the desktop for
Outlook? We install the same package on Windows 2000 and
the icon shows up fine. The icons show up in the Start
menu just fine on both OSs.

The Outlook icon has been removed from the desktop.

I haven't tested it yet but I think you can get it back by doing the
following
-open regedit
-create the subkey
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Deskt
op\NameSpace\{00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]
-create a new string value named; (default)
-give it the value; Microsoft Office Outlook

You may also be able to get it back using TweakXP or
TweakUI for Windows XP which is free from the M$ website.
Ofcourse it's only doing visuallt what Roady has
suggested, but you may find it preferable to editing the
registry.

The Tweak UI only allows you to disable available icons or activate inactve
icons. Another way to go you be creating a shortcut. If you also want the
r-click functionality of the icon you can set the program as the default
e-mail program in your Startmenu so it will show up as pinned which holds
the functionality as well. Then rightclcik the icon and drag & drop it to
your desktop to create a shortcut there. I did the same for the Outlook icon
in my Quick Launch so I can access my account settings from the taskbar.

Don't forget though just because it's not there it doesn't
mean it's not available to TweakUI. You get some weird
stuff, or perhaps I should say 'features' in all Windows
OSs, stuff that makes no sense at all. It's always worth
checking it out...eliminate the options one at a time.

Either way the shortcut is an adequate solution, it's just
a shame about the loss of the right-click functionality as
Roady quite rightly points out is a consequence of solving
the problem this way.

Better reread my post; when you create a shortcut to Outlook this way you
won't loose the right click functionality.

Also note that the Tweak UI only edits the registry settings for already
available icons; you cannot create the Outlook icon from there.
