Install of SP1 always causes setup assistant to start

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel

I installed SP1 to Office 2008 today and ever since then if I start any Office app the setup assistant starts and that app closes. I have tried uninstalling all Office and reinstalling several times to no avail. I have also tried rebooting several times.

I have tried just going back to the pre-SP1 version but it says that it can't read my profile because SP1 updated it and it crashes also.

I am at a standstill unless I can stop this setup assistant to knock it off. For some reason the little My Day widget works just fine.

Thanks

I covered the possibility of these problems in the blog announcement and
discussed how to prevent. However now you have applied without proper
backups, I'm not sure what the exact solution is. I'm looking for a solution
for you on this.

Until I can find some solutions, try applying the Apple combo updater.

You might need to download the combo updater from Apple and run it again
rather than using Software Update. Doing so overwrites potentially
problem-causing files. Several users have reported this fixed some odd
problems they were having with Entourage. Combo updaters will install on the
same version as they¹re applying‹no need to roll back or do a clean install.

Mac OS X 10.5.2 Combo Update (This update delivers several improvements for
both PowerPC- and Intel-based Macs )

For me, only Excel and PowerPoint crash at startup and don't start Setup Assistant. Entourage works fine after going through an update of my identity and the email messages. Word starts up fine but crashes when I quit. This is quite, well, unacceptable, since I can't work on my documents anymore. I'm now basically rendered unproductive. Please help ASAP!

Okay, Crash at Startup is a very different problem--it would have been
better if you had started a new thread.

What happens if you launch them in a new user account in the OS?

I am having the sam issue as pakmule; when I looked into the console it appears that some preferences are not being written properly. Where can I send the console output for analysis?

Try this fix, first, reported by another poster to solve this problem.
Pakmule, try it too.

move these two files to the trash:
[username]/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/Microsoft Office
2008 Settings.plist

/Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/OfficePID.plist

then start an app - put in serial number.
after that it starts the MS update again and then it should work

If that works, can you save the invalid plist files somewhere--MS might
want them to help prevent the problem occurring in the future.

[Office 2008 SP1] install causes setup assistant to loop

This situation is a result of when the Office Setup Assistant detects that
an invalid Product Key was used to install Office 2008. David Pelton,
Microsoft MacBU core lead test has outlined below how to fix the problem and
requests users to contact him with info that will help chase down the issue
to keep it from happening in the future.

You will find details here:

This worked for me.

That did it!

I have no idea why I got hit with this though as I never had to enter a product key/serial number as this is a work laptop and this is a volume copy of Office.

Anyway, thanks.

none of the solution works after update SP1

I reinstalled MS-office-2008 all works except entourage. It finds a corrupt file and crashes. Word, xcll and PPT works

NO more M$ for me anymore I go to openoffice

Please constrain your comments to only 1 thread. Jumping back & forth from
one topic to another makes it impossible for anyone to follow your situation
& without continuity there's little likelihood of progress. This is
especially true since the web interface doesn't quote the message to which
you're responding - nobody has any idea what you're referring to in your
replies which makes it all the more difficult to follow.

Dear Diane & friends:

My son's MacBook (Intel) had the same problem. I carefully did the
process suggested below, but now the problem happens at random every
other day.

An improvement, indeed, but not a solution.

Do you have any hint to solve this strange situation?

Hi Juan, please don't send me private messages that you also post on the
newsgroup. I volunteer my time and I prefer you just ask on the newsgroup.
If I feel that private help is needed, I will advise you.

Try applying the Apple combo updater and see if that fixes it. If not, try
installing Office from the CD over your current install, restart and run SP1
updater again. Last resort would be to use "Remove Office" and install.

Let me know if any of these fixes the problem.
