Install Office 12 over Office 10?

I have Office XP installed on my Vista Home Premium computer. I had tried to
install Office 2007 prior to Office XP, but the install could not get past
the translator files, it would not drill down in the folder where the
translator files are located.

So, first, there was just a patch which I think related to this problem, I
saw in various forums that a lot of people had this problem with installing
Office 2007 and getting stuck at the same point . Am I correct about the
patch? Or is there a way to get to the translator files?

If so, can I install Office 2007 over Office XP, or do i need to remove
Office XP, and, if so, do I need to edit the registry to get rid of all
traces of Offcie XP?

You can install 2007 over XP.

2007 should update OfficeXp without problems.
That being said you can allways uninstall Oxp, reboot, then install 2007
You should be aware as to what exactly is included in your 2007 version as
apposed to your xp version

Thanks, so much. What about the business of the translator files that created
the Office 2007 installation problem in the first place? How do i get around
that?

In addition to what DL said, there is a (recently discovered) bug in Outlook
2007 that will corrupt your mail profile if installed on top of Outlook
2003. Your best bet is to uninstall 2003 and install 2007 - your data and
settings should not be affected...

When the install gets to wanting the translator file or files, it stops,
asks for a .cab file, and also another file, I cannot remember the suffix.
The files are on the installaiton disk, because I searched it in Explorer and
I saw the files. But the install will not drill through the folder to get at
them. I copied them to the C:\, and attempted to access them there; but the
install will not see them.

This is a problem that goes back to at least March of 2008, because I found
it in these forums that far back, and on an internet search, I even found one
person who had purchased Office 2007 in a box at a store and could not
install it for this reason.

This complaint has never been answered at this forum.

I would love to go ahead, I only installed Office XP because of this problem
installing Office 2007.

Any help will be appreciated.

Are you trying to do an Everything install, or a Typical install?

I tried to do everything, but I do not need everything. I do not need
Publisher, or Power Point.

Sorry, what I meant was, when the install starts you should be asked for a
Typical install or a Custom install.

Egad, I could not fine a reply button. I actually made a new post, hoping
you might see it.

The history is: I tried both the Custom and Typical installs for Office 2007
with nothing installed. In both cases, the installer could not get past the
Proofing Folder.

I even copied the folder and its files to the C drive and tried to access
them from there on the install.

So, then, I installed Office XP, which went fine.

But, O.K., now I am functional, but I still want Office 2007. That is what I
use at work, some documents are, e.g., .docx, and I mean, you know, I paid
for the suite.

It was my error in uninstalling it in the first place I (It came
pre-installed, it was my error to uninstall it, does that give any hints?).

As I have said elsewhere, this is a big problem. It was recorded in this
forum as early as March 2008, six posts, but no replies. Also, if one
searches on Proofing.en-us, thisd thing is all over the internet, which no
suggestions.

Any help will be appreciated.

There is a Knowledge Base article on uninstalling Office 2007 if the normal
uninstall fails. It is a big article, but it claims that if you follow the
steps you can then install Office 2007.

Thanks, but uninstalling Office 2007 is how I got in this mess.

I am now trying to re-install Office 2007, and, apparently like many others,
the install will not get past the Proofing.en-us\Proof.es\Proof.cab, and
\Proof.msi files.

Many people are having this problem, first replorted here back in March 2008.

If you have a solution for how to get at these proofing files, that is what
we need.

I mean, even if I were to edit the registry and remove every trace of Office
12, that does not seem to be an answer.

Perhaps this is a different bug then. Have you contacted Office Support
yet? Installation support for Office 2007 is probably free.
