I was executing Microsoft Update on my brand new 64 bit Vista Ultimate
Notebook PC and received an error msg. after everything had downloaded and
installed. The error msg. said that one file, Office 2007 SP1, had failed to
install, and reported encountering error 80200053.
I searched everywhere for info on this error msg. but didn’t find much.
Some of the few entries I found mentioned a “corrupt cabinet fileâ€, or .cab
file.
I tried to manually install the service pack (SP): At first a small window
said it was preparing the install. Then the small window updated to say
something about extracting files; this window only stayed open for a fraction
of a second so I wasn’t able to get the exact verbiage. Then the window
updated to say the install had failed because of a corrupt install file.
I worked with Microsoft Technical Support and we tried lots of things; none
of which worked. Until …
There was a Microsoft app installed on my PC whose name I have forgotten;
something about updating or activating Microsoft 2007 or Office 2007 (In my
‘uninstall’ list it was the first entry so it probably started with the word
‘activate’).
I uninstalled this program (I didn’t need it anymore as I had already
successfully updated to Office 2007). Then I ran Microsoft Update to
download and install SP1 again and got that old 80200053 error again. So I
ran Update again and IT WORKED.
I have since recovered my PC a few times for unrelated reasons, and I could
never get SP1 to install until I had uninstalled that activation program; and
even then it sometimes took a few tries.
Even though my problem was escalated to the techies in the back room at
Microsoft, we never did find out what error 80200053 was or what caused it.
