Install Office 2008 and 2004 at the same time?

I need Word 2004 at least until EndNote supports Word 2008. They are
horribly slow. Anyway, is it possible to install Office 2008 and still
keep at least Word 2008? I saw somewhere that Office 2008 removes
Office 2004, but somewhere else I read that removal is an option.
Before I buy 2008, please confirm about this.

Thanks.

With Word 2008, you can always copy and paste references from EndNote
and when you want to format, export to RTF to scan and format from
within EndNote.

It is an option. You can indeed keep both 2004 and 2008 on your Mac but
I would suggest not using Entourage 2004 then amd making sure you are
not using the Office 2004 notifications, etc to avoid having the
database daemon from bothh 2004 and 2008 running at the same time.

I currently have Word and Excel 2004 on my Mac alongside of 2008.
It works just fine (though I suspect you can't copy from 2004 to paste
in 2008).

Thanks for the reply. That makes me more confident to install 2008.

The method you describe above about EndNote will not work if you have
existing Word 2004 documents with citations. (Which I have many of).
The endnote.com web site actually says you have to send them your
documents for conversion if you no longer have Word 2004! So beware
about this.

You mean already-formatted documents?? That's quite a possibility.
I never work with the formatted manuscripts. I keep them unformatted
until the last minute and only take care of the formatting right before
submission.
This way, if I have to make modifications later, I don;t have to
unformat since I have a copy of the latest version unformatted.

I guess you could keep using those docs in Word 2004.
Alternatively--TEST ON A COPY--I think you would be able to use the
Endnote plug-in in Word 2004 to Unformat Citations, then move the doc to
Word 2008 and use the method Corentin described as you add new
unformatted citations.

I do the same as Corentin--only format on a copy when about to send the
copy off, so've not tested that.

No. My understanding was that Endnote is not compatible with Word 2008
even when using unformatted documents produced with Word 2004.

See their web site.

Not quite following you, Loren--what part of their website? This is
what I see:
http://endnote.com/support/en_wpchart_mac.asp

They specifically say that you can unformat citations in your docs with
Word 2004 and then use the Format Paper method with Word 2008. I'm not
sure whether you mean something different?

The EndNote plug-in is certainly not compatible with Word 2008, at all,
at present--but the EndNote plug-in/toolbar/CWYW is a convenience. It is
not absolutely required to make use of EndNote's bibliographic
management features, it is just easier. Even without the plug-in, you
can continue to use EndNote with Word 2008, but it requires some
adjustments to your workflow. So it may depend on what you mean by
compatible. :)
