Hello Tom,
My end-user licence agreement says this (and *what* a fuss it was to access
it; instructions are available via asking Word Help for "license agreement",
but that's the easy bit):
1.1 General License Grant to install and Use Software Product. You may
install and use one copy of the Software Product on a single computer,
device, workstation, terminal, or other digital electronic or analog device
("Device"). You may make a second copy of the Software Product and install
it on a portable Device for the exclusive use of the person who is the
primary user of the first cops' of the Software Product. A license to the
Software Product may not be shared.
Sounds to me as though you need to call Microsoft Support to ask whether "a
single computer" includes a laptop. I note that the end-user licence
agreement quoted above does not say "a single desktop computer", although
that is what people often assume.
You will not be able to use both installations of Office 2004 at the same
time on a network. However, Mac versions of Office do not have any
provisions to "deny at registration" (i.e., there isn't a "counter" that
records how often Office has been installed), or to tell you that you can't
use the second/first one other than when on the same network (which
includes, for example, being connected via Airport while the other
installation is running).
Provisions for student/teacher versions are different.
[Please note: I am a volunteer at this newsgroup, not an employee of
Microsoft Inc., so my advice above is general in nature and is not intended
to be relied on. Only an appropriate employee of Microsoft can give you
authoritative information.]

* SUGGESTION -- KEEP REVISITING AFTER YOU POST: If you post a question, keep
re-visiting the newsgroup for several days after the first response comes
in. Sometimes it takes a few responses before the best or complete solution
is provided; sometimes you'll be asked for further information. Good tips
about getting the best out of posting are at
http://word.mvps.org/Mac/AccessNewsgroups.html and
http://word.mvps.org/FindHelp/Posting.htm (if you use Safari you may see a
blank page and have to hit the circular arrow icon -- "Reload the current
page" -- two or more times).
