Install/Uninstall Purgatory BCM B2TR

I had Office 2007 with BCM running well. I installed B2TR. Outlook and
everything else installed and ran fine. For some reason the BCM install
failed. I then tried to uninstall BCM for Outlook 2007 (not the B2TR) and
the uninstall failed. I then tried to reinstall BCM for Outlook 2007. It
failed.

I am completely stuck. BCM does not run, and I can neither uninstall the
current cofiguration nor repair it. The B2TR will not install, either.

You need to remove B2 in order to install B2TR. What errors do you get when
you try to uninstall it?

Thank you for responding. The error message is very general. In the final
install panel, a sentence appears in about the same location as the success
message. It states, "Setup failed to uninstall the following components:"
Below this line it lists Business Contact Manager. An additional bit of
potentially useful information is that the SQL service for BCM will not
start. It is configured as "Automatic," but fails to start when called. My
manual attampts to start it, too, end in failure.

Is there a utility that will purge the BCM B2 files. If the history is
erradicated, there should be no reason for conflcit between installations,
....or?

Uninstall the SQL server, but before you do that make sure you have a
current backup of your BCM data.

This question requires further looking into. Basically, you are failing at
the SQL part of things and possible at the .NET phase as well. Now, we can
try to bypass the SQL error by installing a instance of SQL Express and
naming it MSSMLBIZ, but that does not guarantee it'll fix it.

Here are the steps:

3. Go to that folder, then into the sse folder
4. There will be a file called sqlexpr.exe or something similar
5. Run that file ignoring the main install wizard
6. Choose advanced mode when SQL Server Express setup opens and choose to
create a named instance
7. Name that instance MSSMLBIZ - anything else will not bypass the SQL
install process
8. Complete the SQL Server Express setup and check in services.msc (start ->
run -> services.msc) that SQL Server (MSSMLBIZ) is started (check for other
SQL-related entries with MSSMLBIZ if this one is absent)
9. Go back to the main BCM install wizard
10. Attempt to complete it. It should complete nearly instantly because this
in our case made it bypass SQL server installation routines and BCM by
itself is tiny.
11. Start Outlook and check if BCM got installed.

It was a pain to debug, but this was the only way we were able to reinstall
BCM.

Thank you for the procedure. I think this will work. Later today I will
try it and let you know how it turns out.

My experience with SQL is limited; so, I may unwittingly cause my own
problems, but I have yet to use anything SQL-based that did not require
extensive debugging at least once.

Hi Randy,

I've dealt with this issue when I got hit with it on SBA 2007.

It's a bit complicated, so bear with me.

1. Identify what is the exact path BCM is asking you for.
2. Create an empty folder matching that path
3. Start BCM install to the point where it extracts data into some random
folder and do not continue
4. Copy everything from that folder to the folder you created. You may get
some a sharing violation error, in which case copy everything except the
file that's causing the sharing violation.
5. Quit the installer
6. Attempt to modify your installation from the Change/Remove portion of
Add/Remove Programs control panel. (start -> run -> appwiz.cpl)

At this point, things should function normally. I haven't tested this
procedure with BCM, but it was what I had to do with SBA 2007 B2TR.

Tip: if you open that folder that's in use and hit Ctrl-A, it will select
all items. If you then hold down Ctrl and click on the file that's in use,
it will deselect it.

I actually went back to your original suggestion as I figured out what I did
wrong. I installed SQL Server successfully. I then went back to install
"BcmBeta2TR.exe." It successfully installed the Microsoft Office 2007 System
Primary Interop Assemblies (Beta). The installer then began installing BCM
but abruptly halted indicating only that the installation failed. However the
MBSsetuptmpXX.txt log reflects no installation errors.

Other ideas?

Interesting.

Check what else you have in your %temp% folder, which is the universal path
to your temporary files (start -> run -> %temp% -> OK)

Did you reboot before starting bcmbeta2tr.exe install? Did the SQL instance
start? Is it called MSSMLBIZ?
