Installation fatal error

Axel Beckmann

Hi,
I tried this question in the German newsgroup to no avail, so I'm trying
here now.

Some clarification first: I'm talking about German program and OS versions
and tried to translate all messages to the best of my ability, so they might
differ from the original English messages.

I am trying for some time to install Project 2000 on a Windows NT 4 machine
(SP6a, IE 5.5 SP2, Office 2000 Premium w/o SR). Setup starts and shows the
"Welcome ..." screen for a couple of seconds, then shows a "Microsoft
Project 2000-Installation: Fatal error" screen which says "Installation
ended prematurely [OK]" and then stops.

Because this is an old machine with scores of installations and
deinstallations of several programs, I suspected a registry error. Therefore
I used another hard drive and made a new installation from scratch, using
the above mentioned programs. Same problem!!

I tried to copy the CD onto the hard drive and start setup from there. Same
behaviour.

I even tried to install a newer instmsiw.exe und /unreg and /reg it a couple
of times, but still no joy.

The install log shows everything with return code 1 (seems ok to me) until
"CARunCostIE5", which returns code 3 and is immediately followed by
"FatalError".

To verify the CD, I then did an XP prof installation on the same machine
(IE6, Office 2000 w/o SR) and the Project 2000 installation worked perfectly
ok.

Any ideas? Any help?

Thx in advance
