Installation nightmare

I am installing MS Project Server 2002 on Win2K Adv. Server. Mine is a small
organization with only a few engineers, one of which is the sole user of
Project Pro. 2002.

I can't believe this should be as complicated as it has been, but i have
tried running a custom install every which way from sunday, and the
installation always fails with a "Installation has ended prematurely" error.
I ran verbose logging, and everything looks good up until the end where it
states:

=== Logging stopped: 5/12/2005 19:11:49 ===
MSI (c) (28:7C) [19:11:49:519]: Note: 1: 1708
MSI (c) (28:7C) [19:11:49:519]: Product: Microsoft Project Server 2002 --
Installation operation failed.

MSI (c) (28:7C) [19:11:49:549]: Grabbed execution mutex.
MSI (c) (28:7C) [19:11:49:549]: Cleaning up uninstalled install packages, if
any exist
MSI (c) (28:7C) [19:11:49:549]: MainEngineThread is returning 1603
=== Verbose logging stopped: 5/12/2005 19:11:49 ===

I am guessing the "1603" at the end is the error. Can anyone help?! On a
side note, it used to start installation "rollback" during the execution of
the SQL scripts, but i ran those manually, and a couple of them i noticed had
syntax errors according to OSQL that i ran it in. Now I setup the database
and user manually like the documentation says, and i can connect to it fine
from the setup screen when i tell it to use existing DB. the rollback occurs
now sometime during or right after the final activation of the MS Project
services, way at the end of the installation/file copying.

Any help is appreciated.

Unfortunately the installation guidance for 2002 is not very good. I think
the installation procedure and the installation troubleshooting guide
included in my book on 2002 is fairly bullet proof. If you've got a mind to,
you can pick one up on Amazon where they're fairly well discounted at this
point.
