installation of Office 2003

I have windows XP with an old Office version (Office 97)
installed and wish to install Office 2003. Can I just go
ahead and install the 2003 and it will overwrite the
older version? Or do I have to delete 97 before
installation of 2003?

You can install over top and elect to have Office 2003 remove the prior
version.

Would that also be the case in a situation where one was installing (normal)
Office 2003 over an installation of Office XP Professional (Academic
Edition)?

In that case, only the programs included on the 2003 version would be
uninstalled from the XP version.
