Installation of Office SP2 - "not valid WIN32 application"

R

ROY A. DAY

After I downloaded Office SP2 update, and then ran the update, the update
would not install. I got a pop-up window that said "not valid Win32
application." How can I correct this problem, and why would I get such a
ridiculous pop-up window, since the update and Office 2003 are valid Win32
applications?

M

Milly Staples [MVP - Outlook]

Your download may be corrupt - try downloading it again.

I have downloaded the update three (3) times! Accordingly, that is not the
answer. I need additional responses!

T

TaurArian [MS-MVP]

Delete the download, clear out the temporary internet cache and then try downloading the full patch
from the site.
I agree with Milly Staples, your download is corrupt.

I have followed your procedure on deleting files from the cashe many times
over the last fifteen years, and that has never solved any problem. Your
next suggestion will be to delete all the temporary files, and then .... Your
response, like Milly, is a typical corrupted file response. Time is money. I
don't have time to waste on this issue, unless Microsoft (specifcially, Bill
Gates) pays me money upfront! If Microsoft would issue the SP2 Update on a
"CD," I would not have this problem. Problems always develop from downloads,
but very seldon from "CD's." I will wiat for a "CD" version, unless I here
something more positive and correct than a "automaton response" of corrupted
file. The next procedure someone will suggest is to format my hard drive!
TIME IS MONEY!

If you want a better answer, and understanding that time is money and that

Have your "Microsoft - MVP" organization issue a "CD" for the SP2" upgrade.
The question is: can you read and write, and comprehend what you read? Are
you a high school dropout! Can you generate "source code" to correct the
probelm? Microsoft "source code" is the problem! Deficient "programmers!"
TIME IS MONEY! The reason you are free, is because you are a "MTM." You get

TO: BEN B. [US]. Your suggestion is well taken, and could actually be the
correct answer. It usually takes an answer on the "light side" when things

After several attempts to get some support via this group I decided to pass
the question to Microsoft Sweden. With in 24h I got this:

Its translated in a hurry, so apologies for any mistakes.

Hi Lars!

My name is Johan and I will try to support you with your office issue.

I suggest you clear out the info from your Office installation and repeat
your install once more and then get SP2
1. Download Windows Installer Cleanup Utility.
Description of Windows Installer CleanUp

2. After install of Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, click Start -> All
Program -> Windows Install Clean Up
3. Mark all Office-versions in the list click Remove. Don’t take anything
else off the list.
4. Click OK and wait until done.
5. Click Exit to close the program.
6. Open "My Computer" and delete folder "MSOCache" under C:.
(If you don’t find the folder go to : Tools -> Folder alt? -> Show -> Show
hidden files)
7. Click Start -> Run, print %Temp% click Enter.
8. Empty the folder %Temp% .
9. Empty the tray.
10. Restart your computer install full version Office 2003.
11. Download from OFFICE 2003 SP2 from the following link:
Office 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FamilyID=57e27a97-2db6-4654-9db6-ec7d5b4dd867

It worked, I really appreciate this service, this was free of charge. It was
quick, it was step by step and it resolved my problem.

Hi Roy,

As my wife would say, "An ounce of honey is worth a pound of vinegar!", as
alluded to in previous posts.

Having provided these words of wisdom I'll also paste my reply to the post
titled: "Download of office2003-sp2 is over 2.5 hours, i want a CD-rom" by
dhlane

"I totally agree with the original post. Posting a Service Pack (in my case
I
need both SP 1 & 2) without providing an option for obtaining the CD, and not
indicating any future availability on CD (as Don MI provides in his answer)
shows very little concern for the time spent by those who are led to believe
that
their only option is the download."

There's not much "honey" in that reply, but hopefully Microsoft will try to
correct the general displeasure and frustration with the inadequate concern
for the time spent by their customers to improve the functionality of their
software, as shown in this and other related threads.

Microsoft will be releasing a CD soon. :)

TO: BEN B. [US]. Your suggestion is well taken, and could actually be the
correct answer. It usually takes an answer on the "light side" when things
get "heavy." When time permits, I will try your suggestion. Thank you for
the
suggestion. In the interim, it would be suggested that all readers of this
issue force and coerce Microsoft to issue a "CD" with the Office SP2
update.
CASE CLOSED. Thank you all for responses, either "light" or "heavy."

On a light note have you tried downloading it through Microsoft Update
available at http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate?

Gee, we are so sorry that we cannot provide a personalized and
accurate
answer for your system configuration, hardware and software
environment.
After all, we are mere volunteers and our time is free to those who
need
it
and seek it.

If you want a better answer, and understanding that time is money and
that
time might need to be compensated, I would suggest paying Microsoft
Product
Support Services for an answer more pleasing to your exacting tastes.
I
am
sure that they agree that time is money and will charge you for their
time.
