Installation Problem

W

William A. Doyle

My hard drive on which I was running MS Access 2002
(Windows XP) failed during the warranty period and Dell
sent me a new hardrive which I have installed. However
when I attempt to install Access 2002 from my
reinstallation CD I get a message that it can't find a
qualifying product even though I've inputted the correct
product code that is printed on the back of the
installation CD.

Is this caused by some anti-duplicating control? I am not
trying to use it on two computers since my original
harddrive failed. How can I get it to install or who do I
need to talk to at MS? There is no phone number on the
installation CD package.

2 things come to mind:

1) Was Access pre-installed on your Dell machine when you first bought it?
If so, talk to them about your reinstallation problems, especially if the
reinstallation disks came from Dell as well. The problem is probably very
similar to #2 but you're probably dependent on them for a workaround.

2) If you installed Access yourself after you got the machine, was there a
previous version of it (or ~any~ other Office related program) on the
machine when you did the original installation? It sounds as if you are
trying to install an "upgrade" version of Access and the program can't find
any preexisting evidence of the software that "qualifies" you to use the
upgrade version. Without evidence of a previous version it doesn't think
you "qualify" for the lower priced upgrade version. If you have an earlier
version available to you, you can try installing it first and then see if
Access 2002 installs.

The list of "qualifying" products is not limited to the Office suite. It
could have been a competing product (Corel Office, etc.), Microsoft Works
or any of the individual Office components (or its competitors components).
If this is the case you may not need to actually install the product:
sometimes (but not always) simply putting the older installation disk in the
drive at the right time is enough for the new installation to continue.

Otherwise try http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=offxp
If nothing else there is a "Need More Help?" link that should lead you to a
phone number you can use depending on your geographic location.

Hope this helps,

That was it. I tried the installation again after I had
reinstalled MS Office and the installation was successful.

Thank you, George.
