Installation problems

I have been using Office 97 with XP without problems for some time. Without
an apparent reason Access continually crashes. I attempted to uninstall and
reinstall Office to be confronted with the message:
"16 Bit Windows Subsystem
C:\Windows\System32\Autoexec.NT
The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows
applications"
I am unable to run the installation disc at all.
I have up to date virus software running and it finds no problems. It is
beyond me please if someone has an answer.
