Installation runs every time

I have one client install of Office XP (W2K OS) where every time the user
opens Word or PowerPoint the install routine "preparing to
install....gathering information....etc" runs and after about 20 seconds the
program opens. Changes from the default setup (Options etc) are maintained.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled serveral times and can't figure out what
is going on. Does anybody have an idea what I can do to fix this. A search
in the KB didn't turn up anything.

Just in case someone is interested: The problem went away after installing
SP1 and SP2.
