I have been watching these threads for over a week and have attempted the
many posted solutions to solve the installation of Office 2003 returning the
"installation source .. not available." As a note, Office XP Pro can be
installed and reinstalled at will. Therefore this problem is unique to Office
2003. Using a third-party tool, I removed all references to Office from the
registry, deleted all folders containing Office components and deleted
MSOCache. The end result is Office was never on the system. Installing from a
local CD, the installation abends with the installation source error.
However, the install creates a 7.88mb folder MSOCache containing a skeleton
of what you would expect to find in the folder - namely the list of cabs and
their checksums. The process abends at some point beyond this and writes an
event record 11708. The issue does not seem to be "rights" related, since I
tried this with several different user ids. Since this is a time consuming
process, I have documented what I have observed in hopes of providing some
additional information that may lead to a resolution. The workstation is XP
Pro SP2 with all patches through this week. Resources are not an issue -
plenty of memory and disk space. I certainly do not want to reload the system
from scratch, hoping for a speedy resolution. As an aside, this workstation
was loaded with the beta of Office 2007, but was removed because the product
was not ready for prime time. A variety of issues were observed with Office
2003 after 2007 was removed. This is what prompted the uninstall and
reinstall of 2003.
