Installation Troublems

C

Chad

I'm trying to install FrontPage 2003 after uninstalling all of Office 2000
Premium, including FrontPage 2000, and installing Office 2003. While it is
in the process of "removing files" I get the following error message: "Error
1326. Error getting file security:
C:\DOCUME~1\myname\APPLIC~1\GetLastError:5"

I've tried about everything to get past this. I should note that the
permission for the above-referenced directory is set to "read only" and I've
tried going in there and changing that permission for that directory and all
sub-directories, but the change doesn't "take". I've tried complete install.
Tried standard install. I just don't know what else to try.

I'm on an XP Pro machine on a SBS2003 network, and I have admin privileges
for the network and this machine (though I'm NOT an IT professional), all the
updates and service packs loaded everywhere up to today's date (Nov 3 2005).

Any help would be appreciated.

Yes. It is a hybrid.

It's actually a word my little sister used once when she was about four
years old, and it became a regular fixture in my family.

Glad to brighten your day.

Now, someone please brighten mine by answering my query...

Did you reboot the machine after the Office 2000 uninstall?

Does a file or folder named GetLastError:5 exist at that location??

If so delete it, reboot and then try.

However, GetLastError is actually an error trapping routine used in programming languages.
I suspect you might have a bad install disk.

There is no file by that name.

How do i know if I have a bad install disk? (Is there some program I can
use to test the disk?) And what do I do with a bad install disk? I suppose
the answer is "call microsoft and ask for a new one". That's no problem.
It's part of my partner program action pack.

And here's another question: I get that error during the "removing files"
phase of the installation. Wouldn't it only be a bad install disk issue if
it happened later, during the "adding files" or the onloading phase? ANd I'm
not asking because I'm a smarty-pants. I really don't have any idea what I'm
talking about.

Thanks for your ideas.

I downloaded that utility and have installed it.

Now I suppose the question is this: What do I do with it?

I should note that amongst the programs listed as installed on my computer
when I run that utility are two MS Office 2000 programs. (SR1 premium and
SR1 disk 2). Are you telling me I should remove those two using that
utility?

Thanks for you help/thoughts.

Here's what I would do.
Go here: http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm and download and install the free RegSeeker.

Run it and use the functions that clean the registry and also run all of the options under
the Histories section.

Make sure it is set to save "backups"

It will find a lot of "junk" and I mean a lot.

When done, restart the computer and then try the install.

I did a Google search for that error and found reference to the KB link, it
looked promising so I posted it for you. The only time I've used the Windows
Installer Cleanup Utility was for a problem with .NET and it worked for
that...so dunno...

Ok. Now I've tried this. Didn't work.

But while trying it, I notice/realized something that might be relevant.

In my problem description, I indicate that the subdirectory in "documents
and settings" is "myname", which is actually a name I used for a short time
when I first got this computer (before I connected to the network at work).
I likely installed Office while logged in as that username, but haven't used
that username since about February. Most of the folders under that username
are empty or close to empty. I'm wondering if this problem might be related
to the fact that I installed Office 2000 while logged in as that user. Might
I need to delete that username and all the folders under that username?

Could that be the cause of my problems?

I think this was the issue. I've deleted that old/unused username and got
past the hitch. Seems to have installed, though I'm going through the Office
Update process now and haven't run FP2003 yet. But, i think this worked.

I'll let ya'll know if it doesn't.

Thanks for your help and ideas.

The proper term for that kind of hybrid is "portmanteau," first used by
Lewis Carroll (Charles Dodson) in "Alice in Wonderland."
