Installed font not available in word

P

Paseband

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel Hi,

Fonts such as "Devanagari" and "Devanagari-QWERTY" which are preinstalled on mac (which can be typed easily in edit text application of mac) do not appear in the list of fonts in word or in any MS Office 2008 applications. After selecting Devanagari from menu of mac, it types only boxes with question mark inside.
In help search of MS Word, it types in Devanagari characters.
What must be the problem?
Please help,

Paseband

Hi Paseban

This problem has been frustrating me too. If I install a devanagari font such as Sanskrit 2003 in Word for Mac, it will recognise it, but not the ligatures. Hence ???? becomes ????? ! The strange thing is that Powerpoint for Word writes perfect devanagari and recognises all the complex ligatures (it says it is using Calibri Theme Headings as the font, however I'm pretty sure it's using Devanagari MT). I have tried talking to Apple and Microsoft about it, but no luck. If you find a solution please let me know as I will you.

Cheers

Peter

Hi Peter:

There is a clue there: If PowerPoint "says" it is using Calibri, then it IS
using Calibri :) Mind you, you need to select just "one" character to be
sure, since in Unicode the system will go looking for a glyph if it can't
find the one it wants in the font in use.

Calibri is an OpenType TrueType font that does contain ligatures.

If the font you are using doesn't contain ligatures, or if it's not coded in
TrueType format, Word can't use the ligatures. OpenType PostScript is a
legitimate encoding scheme, but Word can't use it properly.

Cheers

Hi John

Many thanks for the advice. However, Word for Mac just doesn't seem to be able to handle entering devanagari with the QWERTY devanagari keyboard enabled on a Mac. Just a series of small boxes with question marks in them appear even when I use Calibri. Word for Mac will not allow me to use Devanagari MT (TTF) which is supplied in the Mac Font Book. If I load a font such as Sanskrit 2003(TTF) which was designed for Windows, the characters will appear in Word for Mac, but not the ligatures. I just downloaded iWorks and its Pages app recognised devanagari straight off - ligatures and all. It's a pity I cannot get Word for Mac to do the same as I have been using Word for such a long time and would like to continue. Any suggestions?

Your help is much appreciated.

Regards

Peter

Hi Peter:

My ignorance of Devengari knows no bounds.

It appears to be a right-to-left font. The Text Engine in Word 2008 can't
handle RTL: end of story, no fix possible.

PowerPoint has a different rendering engine which can handle the font.

I don't know what else to tell you...

Sorry.

Hi John & Peter,

Thanks for considering my problem.
Devanagari is left to right script only and not right to left.
On Windows os Unicode platform Devanagari is very much available in Word 2007 or in its earlier versions. It is available in all applications of MS Office.

Cheers,

Hi Paseband:

Yeah, sorry, it would appear that Indic script simply does not work on Word
2008, and I cannot find any way to make it work. It would appear that it's
not going to be available in Word 2011 either.

You can look around here:
http://bhashaindia.com/Pages/home.aspx

But I did not find anything there that would enable you to use Indic scripts
in Word 2008.

These guys couldn't get it to work either:

Sorry
