Installed fonts not used by Word

R

Rob van Albada

Hi,

On my mew XP computer i installed some special (Hebrew, Arabic,
Javanese) fonts which I used without any problem under Windows-98.

Now, Word will not show Hebrew, Arabic or Javanese (NOT: Japanese!!)
type on screen, but only Latin ('a', 'b', 'c' et cetera).

How do I install the fonts in such a way that they will be displayed
as intended?

The fonts in question are all TTF fonts, attributes not hidden, not
system.
I installed them via the menu in the FONTS map, and rebooted the
computer.
Nothing helps.

It DID work when I was still using Windows-98.
The fonts appear in the Font List in Word, but cannot be activated
somwhow.

Do I have to tell Word that I want to use Unicode fonts? How do I do
that?

Kind regards,

Rob.

Do you have a default printer installed in Windows? (Not in Word, in
Windows.)

Oh yes. (Brother HL-1850, a duplex laser printer.)
I can print from any application, even from Word!
I have only one printer installed.

Kind regards,

Hi Rob,

In Start=>Programs=>Microsoft Office=>Microsoft Office tools with the language settings tools what languages are active and what
Keyboard languages in the Windows control panel?

If the correct languages are active you may want to also post in the Word International Features newsgroup (link below)

Hi Bob,

Unfortunately I can not check this.
As it happens, my Word-2000 CD-ROM appears to be damaged. There is a
small (2 cm) radial crack from the inside to a few mm of the innermost
(first, last?) tracks.
I do not have a back-up of this CD-ROM, so perhaps I have to but a new
one...

The CD-ROM player is OK, I tried this with another CD-ROM.

Thanks for your answer anyway,

Kind regards,

Rob.

Just to be sure, you have a printer driver for that printer installed and it
is set, in Windows, as the default printer? You need not respond unless this
is not the case. If it is not the case, some printer needs to be set as a
default. (That you can print from Word and other applications doesn't mean
you have a default printer installed and selected; it means you can print.)

As I said, I have only one printer. So of course it is the default
printer.
When I open the printer settings map, only this printer appears, with
a small black circle (with a white checkmark inside) indicating it is
the default printer.

Kind regards,

Rob.

PS,

I have a backup of my complete Programs directory as it was under
Windows-98. (When these fonts still were useable.)
Is it possible to copy some fines from the old Word directory to the
new one in order to upgrade the language settings?
(As long as I don't have a replacement for my Word-2000 CD-ROM).

TIA,

Kind regards,

Rob.

Hi Rob,

Also check though in Word in File=>Print to see if that printer has been 'seen' by Word.

Hi Rob,

Unfortunately MS (at least in the U.S.) can no longer provide Office 2000 series program disks :(

If Office 2000 is installed you should be able to check in both the Windows Control panel for keyboard layouts and in the Microsoft
Office Tools in the the Start menu for language settings.

Hi Bob,

The coputer store where I had bought Word-2000 years ago still had one
new CD-ROM with Word-2000 for me.
So I de-installed Word and reinstalled it from the new CR-ROM.
To my surprise I did not have to change the settings (blue background,
special key codes for specific characters et cetera): everything was
the same as under my older version.

I did install some other languages like you suggested, but it did not
make any difference.
It still will not work, for exemple, with the Aharoni font.

NB Javanese does not exist as far as Microsoft is concerned (because
it has only some 100 million speakers?).

What can I try now???

Kind regards,

Rob.

Hi Rob,

You may want to also post in the Word International Features group. Some of the Windows language folk from MS have been known to
participate in the disussions there (link below).

Include the version and base language of both the Windows and Office versions (including build level of Word from Help=>About) when
posting there.
