Installed WDS 3, indexed, still can't search

I'm thinking of reinstalling Lookout, since WDS isn't working at all - all I
get is "Outlook cannot perform your search". I did not have any previous
version of WDS installed, so I have nothing to remove. The index shows as
being completed; I've tried searching new, old, and items inbetween. I've
tried the advanced query as well - still won't work. Old-fashioned
'advanced find' doesn't work correctly either; after trying it and waiting
for awhile on my inbox (lots of items), I tried it on a subfolder with 29
items - after letting it go for several minutes I still got no results. So
I tried a custom view - and got an error, "The messaging interface has
returned an unknown error. If the problem persists, restart Outlook." I
restarted Outlook - still won't work. The problem with the custom view
appears to only occur in mail files (the other two problems - advanced find
& instant search not working - are broken throughout Outlook). I've tried
rebuilding the index twice, and am not going to try that again since it
doesn't work. However, before I completely remove WDS 3 (in the hopes of
getting regular searching back), I'm wondering if there's anything else I
might try.

Lookout was great, and I was really looking forward to WDS 3.0. But not
being able to search at all is a major problem.
