Installer 3.1 and Office 97

G

gbruntzel

I am trying to install MS Access 97 on a new PC with Office 2003
pre-installed. I have successfully done this on a number of other PCs
by renaming the Hatten font, etc.

The new PC also has Windows Installer 3.1. Office 97 setup will not
run. Launching setup gives a short hourglass then nothing. When
signing off the PC, there are errors about setup failing to start.
Does anyone know if there is a compatability problem with Office 97 and
the latest Windows installer? The computer also has sp2 for Office
2k3. We have several database apps written in Access 97 so we really
need access to them while converting for ADO.

Thanks,
GKB

Hi G.K.,

MS Office 97 does not use the MS Windows Installer. It uses the older 'Acme' setup program. MS Office 2000 was the first Windows
Installer (MSI) based version.

Basically, MS's recommendation for mixed version products is to install Older to Newer in sequence, but you may also want to check
that you have disabled the antivirus software and use a custom rather than standard installation and choose only the Access 97
choice from the Office 97 setup (disable installation of the Web Authoring tools)

Also be sure that the 'Setup.exe' that is being launched is the one on the Office CD, not a different version with the same name
that may be on your PC drive.

Thanks Bob. I have seen the MS article about installing the older
versions first. However, I never even get a chance to do the custom
installation. I have done this on other XP SP1 boxes w/o any problems.
Something is not allowing the old Acme setup to run. Upon shutting
down I get the following error:

NTVDM.exe failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142)

So..........I'm afraid removing Office 2003 and starting with 97 won't
do the trick. Ideas?

Thanks,
Greg
