Installer quits during upgrade install

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

After installing Office 2008 on my new MacBook Pro, I checked for updates, and installed one small one, about 2 mb. Then it told me another, over 100mb, was available. I downloaded it and began the process of installation but after 10 minutes the progress bar still showed only the tiniest stripe. No progress seemed to occur over the next 10 min. so I force quit it (it wouldn't let me quit in the normal fashion).

I do not want to try this again for fear it will cause damage to other software, or to Office.

Any idea why this is happening? I'm running OS 10.5.4.

Here are the error messages that became visible after I force quit the Installer. I do not know if they are both related to the actual problem, or if the second one might be a consequence of my trying to quit the installer before using force-quit.

"Could not run the script editor "Script Editor" because of a program error.
0 "

" "Microsoft Office 2008 Update" doesn't understand the event sysodisA>> message."

Installing Office should not damage other software. Do you have a backup
drive? If not, you should get one. Not having a backup is asking for
trouble.

It would be a guess as to why you are having problems. Downloading any file
is subject to the conditions on the net at that time.

See this page for help installing. It gives exact screenshots of each step
including the updates to take you to the current 12.1.1.

I know you have a new MacBook, but I have seen some strange problems with
new computers. Even ones that have completely filled the drive.

This is a first for this error.

1) Download and run the Apple combo updater. Restart your computer and
Repair Permissions.

Mac OS X 10.5.4 Combo Update
(For both PowerPC- and Intel-based Macs )
<http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1054comboupdate.html>

2) Try this workaround for the installer:

Launch the updater

Open the update.dmg and copy it's contents (the update installer app) to
your desktop.

Eject the update.dmg virtual disk that was mounted when you opened the
update.dmg and also make sure your Office DVD is ejected (if it was in).

Run the update installer application that's on your desktop.

I've just had that same last message while installingthe same update. the first time it happened I simply answered to continue and the installation went on and ended succesfully in appearance.
After that I had a problem with Word: it opens but as soon as you enter into any menu option (File Open, Preferences) it hangs. The whole MacBook Pro hangs! And it's almost impossible to make a forced quit. I can't open any other program and finally I turn off the computer.
I've done 5 attempts with same results with Word.
I was installing Office 2008 for the first time from original CD.

I would very much appreciate some help...meanwhile I'll be using Pages.

I just posted a
message asking about your unusual error message so hopefully I will have
some other suggestions to offer.

Received this....

This is due to the most recent Apple update that came out earlier this week.

Apple added code that blocks any AppleScript that puts up a dialog through
the Installer. The Microsoft AppleScript code checks to see if the user is
running any Office application that needs to be shut down hits this new
change and causes these errors.

To work around the issue you need to quit all Microsoft applications before
running the update. Since you normally launch the AutoUpdater through an
application, I suggest you open it from Help --> Check for Updates... in the
Menu bar from any Office application then select to keep it in the Dock.

Log out/in with Shift key down. This disables all applications in Startup
Items includes the faceless Office applications that might interfere with
the update.

Launch AutoUpdate from the Dock and continue with the update. After the
update you can remove AutoUpdate from the Dock.

Let me know if this works or if the error is still popping up.

I tried to update last night (Aug12-2008) and I tried twice and both times it
just hung on the 10% while trying to run the QuitMicrosoft-something script
(sorry I no longer have the exact name).

However, today Aug-13th, I don't know if the date is important, I get the
script error <<event sysodisA>>. But, it went forward and finished the
install. I can click in the menus, open files, etc. and haven't had problems
as of yet. So, I will post some of the various error messages left in my
logs from the installation in case it helps figure this out.

If you quit all Microsoft applications prior to running the update you will
not be hit by this problem.

This is a known issue by Microsoft. Apparently it happens on MACs and PCs
even when all visible applications are quit first. Its reportedly because
something else is running in the background that it does not like. You could
try and figure out what that might be, but I did not. You could stop the
install, but I chose not to. Instead, when the error message comes up (and
the error screen may come up cleverly BEHIND the install screen) or when the
progress bar appears to be going nowhere, drag the installer screen aside to
reveal the error screen. Pick continue with install. I did this three
times, (once for each update) and each time the software said it was
installed successfully. I have had no problem running the new Office
software installed in this fashion.
