installing MS Office on a new hard drive?

R

Rick1013

Hello, new user here. Can anyone answer or direct me to a previou
discussion re: the following scenario?

I purchased a HP laptop several yrs ago which came preloaded with IIR
a trial version of Office. I purchased the upgrade and went along m
merry way until a couple of days ago when....the hard drive crashed.
after purchasing a new drive, i reinstalled Windows XP successfully
but have no disks for reinstalling Office 2000, only the disks for th
upgrade t Office 2003.

From web and phone trees, I determined I needed to contact HP, whic
resulted in a charge of ~$60 for 3 days of telephone support (hell
Bangalore!) during which time I am to get them to give me some sort o
code which I can take to Microsoft that....what? Unlocks hithert
unexplored regions of the so-called "upgrade disks" to supply the ful
2000 version? Mailed versions of CDs? Online download?

Would i just be better off ponying up for Office 2007?

Thanks

Microsoft no longer does anything with 2000 except *maybe* issue a new
product key if you can prove you own a retail version of Office 2000. And
that maybe isn't a strong maybe now that 2007 is out. And Microsoft doesn't
do ANYTHING about OEM software, regardless of the version.

I have no idea what kind of a code they gave you to give to Microsoft but I
suspect your adventure will only cause you a lot of frustration. I know what
I would do - bite the bullet, buy Office 2007 and learn an expensive lesson.

(Others may recommend you try to get a copy of Office 2000 on eBay but I
would never recommend buying software on eBay. I'd rather swim with hungry
woman-eating sharks.)

thanks for your help. i likely will do just that.

as for the lesson, do you recommend that, for the next laptop, i *not
buy a pre-loaded computer? most of the ones i see come that way.

To have been provided with a trial version of Office2k must have been many
many years ago, we are now on the third version from that.
Upart from biting the bullitt and purchasing a retail edition of Office2007
your only other real option is to locate a qualifying component to enable
you to use the upgrade 2003 cd's eg Works or similar from ebay or other sale
PS Since your Laptop is apparently quite old, do you have the memory/cpu to
run Office2007 meaningfully? apparently some complain its more resource
hungary than earlier office versions

Assuming you mean pre-loaded with Office... OEM software is a less expensive
way of getting Office however the license is tied to that system. The only
way to get it in another computer is to buy an upgrade and use the OEM
software as the qualifying product. If you are going to use a desktop and a
laptop, you need a second license. Also, Microsoft cannot help you if you
have issues or lose you product key.

I'd rather use retail, which allows me to run it on my desktop and laptop
plus Microsoft is there if I need them.

Ultimately, it's up to you and your particular usage.
