Installing MS Project Server 2007 onto a single server.

Evan

Hello,

I'm trying to make a decision for our group at work to proceed to use MS
Project Server 2007 but before I do, I want to test it out with the trial
version. If I can't try it out, then I have no way to convince management to
proceed with using Project Server 2007 for our group.

I want to install the Project Server 2007 Trial version on a
standalone server. The server is a Dell PowerEdge 1435, which has a
"Dual-Core" AMD Opteron Processor 2210, a 1.80 GHz and 3.50 GB of RAM. The
server has absolutely none of the software necessary to run it. I'm first
trying to see if there are trial versions of all the other software that I
can use. Where can I get them?

Once I get all the trial versions of all the software, is it pretty straight
forward to install?

During the trial, it's just going to be 4 users who already have MS Project
Professional 2007 on their laptops. We want to use Web Access and most of
the functionality.

Please help me out.

Take care,
Evan

Hello Evan,

Trail version will come with softwares "Project Server, Windows
SharePoint Services 3.0 and SQL Server 2005 Express database". You
need Windows Server 2003 operating system on server prior to install
trail version.

You have to follow the below sequence of steps for trail version
installation:

Steps:

1) Install Windows Server 2003 Operating System (Standard/Enterprise
Edition)

2) Configure IIS

3) Enable ASP.NET 3.0 Components on IIS

4) Choose Domain name for server and Domain account for installation

5) Install Trail version and install and Choose Basic Installation.
This option installs the SQL 2005 Express
Edition as Project Server database.

Please refer the following URL on my website for more details on Trai
version installtion.

Chak,

Is there a way to get the trial version of Windows Server 2003 Operating
System?

Also, if we plan on migrating in the future, is there a way to get a trial
version of the full SQL Server 2000 and not just the 2005 Express?

Hi Evan,

Hmm... Microsoft expect customer should have atleast license for
Operating system to install Project Server 2007 trail version. Evan:
It seems to be you need everything trail softwares :)

Anyways, I can suggest the following for you.

1) Install Windows Server 2003 R2 with SP2 trail version

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsserver/bb430831.aspx

Answer to your question on database server trail version, Microsoft
always offer trail version for their new products. As I know, there is
no SQL Sever 2000 trail version available for download.

Microsoft now offers, SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition trail version
for 180 days.

SQL Server 2005 enterprise edition trail version:
http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2005/en/us/trial-software.aspx

Wow.. it's great to start with. But here is the catch. After trail
version, you want to keep MS Project Server and want to continue the
MS Project Server 2007 by converting as licensed product, you will be
going to be ended up paying lot of money on SQL Server enterprise
edition licensing cost. (FYI: Enterprise edition is 4 times expensive
than Standarad edition. Standard edition will cater 100% functionality
of Project Server 2007).

Evan

Chak,

Thanks for the info. You are correct and like I stated, I need "all" the
software that is necessary to run Project Server 2007 for my trial.

But I'm guessing that there are other SQL Server trial versions other than
the Enterprise Edition, correct?

Isn't there a later SQL Server trial version other than 2000 or the
Enterprise Edition that will work with Project Server 2007, which I can later
transfer if I decide to keep it?

Thanks,
Evan

Evan

Chak,

If I use the Enterprise Edition during my trial, can I later transfer it to
the standard 2005 edition? Is the Enterprise Edition the only one available
for 2005?

Evan,

Yes, As I know, only SQL Server 2005 enterprise edition is available
for trail. Please check again with Microsoft.

Enterprise trail edition need to be uninstalled to updgrade to
Standard edition.

Please see below note from Microsoft:

Upgrading and Uninstalling the Trial Software:

The 180-day trial version of SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition can be
upgraded to the fully licensed version of SQL Server 2005 Enterprise
Edition without uninstalling the trial software prior to the end of
the 180-day period. If upgrading to the fully licensed version of SQL
Server 2005 Standard Edition, Workgroup Edition, or Developer Edition,
it is recommended that you uninstall the 180-day trial version of SQL
Server 2005 Enterprise Edition before installing the fully licensed
version of the other editions. Please refer to the product
documentation for information about upgrading to the fully licensed
software.

Thanks so much for the help.

I just have one last question.

You gave me the instructions on how to install the Project Server 2007 trial
version, which automatically uses SQL Server 2005 Express. But how do I
install it if I want to use the trial version of the SQL Server 2005
Enterprise Edition? My plan would be to convert it to the SQL Server 2005
Standard Edition.

Also, I have a single Dell server (Dell PowerEdge 1435) that has a Dual-Core
AMD Opteron Processor 2210, which is 1.80 GHz and 3.50 GB of RAM. Do you
think I will have any problems running the trial version of "Project Server
2007" with the following required softwares?
•Project Server 2007
•Windows Server 2003 R2 with SP2
•Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition
database

Note that above, I want to use the trial version of the SQL Server 2005
Enterprise Edition and later switch over to the Standard Edition, since this
can be done. My only concern is the HW requirement.

Thanks,
Evan

Evan,

1) To install Project Server 2007 trail version with SQL Server
Enterprise/Standard editions, you have to use Farm installation
method. You have to choose "Advanced" installation method. (Basic
installation method is to install Project Server with SQL Server
Express edition)

Please refer the following URLs on my website:

Trail version Installation: http://www.epmcentral.com/deploy/pj07evalinstall.php

Farm Installation: http://www.epmcentral.com/deploy/pj07farminstall.php

2) Microsoft recommends the Server with processor speed of 2.5
Gigahertz (GHz) processor or higher; dual processor with 2 GB RAM for
Project Server installation.

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/projectserver/HA101945401033.aspx?pid=CL100796251033#2

I remember, you mentioned, you have only 4 users for trail period. It
seems to be your Dell Server's hardware might be enough. If Possible,
try to upgrade the processor.

3) Please plan and prepare your self for Data migration from SQL
Enterprise Edition to Standard Edition once your trail period is done.
It seems to be you have to uninstall SQL Server 2005 enterprise
edition prior to install Standard edition.

Hi Chak,

Thanks for the information.

Based on # 3 you stated below, since I only have one server available for
this trial, this means I have to used the SQL Server 2005 Express version.
If this is the case, I won't need to prepare since I won't be able to do the
migration anyways. Is this correct?

Hi Evan,

You can install MS Project Server 2007 on Single Server with following
database server options:

SQL Server 2005 Express Edition

(OR)

SQL Server 2000/2005 Enterprise or Standarad Editions

If you are still planning to use SQL Server 2005 enterprise trail
version, still you can install it technically everything on single
server.

(Yes, you are correct. SQL Express version can not be upgraded to
Standard Edition.)

Chak,

I was looking around trying to fully understand the limitations with the SQL
Server 2005 Express Edition since even though we may want to buy Project
Server it's possible that the Express version may be enough for our situation
when we decide to buy. Only a handful of people currently have MS Project
Professional on their desktop computers right now and only 30 people (at the
most) will end up using the Web Access application. Let me know your
thoughts. This would allow us to go ahead and install the Project Server
trial version using the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and if we end up
buying Project Server 2007, we don't need to migrate over to the SQL Server
2005 Standard Edition.

If you think that we will be limited, then I can go ahead and install the
SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition and later convert to the Standard Edition
when we buy. If this is the case, can you tell me how to install Project
Server 2007 trial version and cchoose the SQL Server Enterprise Edition
instead of the Express Edition?

One thing I do know is that if we decide to buy Project Server, we will get
more server, so we would create a small server farm environment.

Thanks,
Evan

Evan,

SQL Server 2005 express edition with Project Server 2007 is not cable
to support SQL Analysis Services, so it’s not possible to explore the
Data Analysis, OLAP views on installed Project Server. I hope you
aware about OLAP cubes and Data Analysis functionality on Project
Server 2007. Data Analysis offers a multi dimensional data views on
Project/Resource/Issue/Risks data in pivot table format through
Project Web Access.

SQL Server 2005 express edition also having limited capabilities on
SQL Reporting Services, if you decided to use SRS for custom
reporting. SQL Reporting Services offers subscription service to
deliver the reports through scheduling and email service on standard
and enterprise editions.

So, if your organization is decided to skip the Data Analysis feature,
you can setup your Project Server environment with SQL Express
Edition.

Answer to your question on installation of Project Server with SQL
Enterprise edition, I already mentioned on installation process.
Please follow the same steps of trail version; the only difference is
you have to choose the Advance installation option to specify your
database server name during the installation.

This is perfect.

Thanks Chak. You've made things clear.

Below is the HW that I have and the SW I'm going to install:

All I have is just one Dell PowerEdge 1435 server with a Dual-Core AMD
Opteron Processor 2210, which is 1.80 GHz and 3.50 GB of RAM.

1.) Install trial version of Windows Server 2003 Operating System (Windows
Server 2003 R2 with SP2) before installing the trial version of Project
Server 2007. The trial version is located at
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsserver/bb430831.aspx.

2.) Configure IIS

3.) Enable ASP.NET 3.0 Components on IIS

4.) Choose Domain name for server and Domain account for installation

5.) Install the Project Server 2007 trial version and choose "Advanced"
Installation to install the trial version of SQL Server 2005 Enterprise
Edition. The Project Server 2007 trial version can be found at
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/bb738023.aspx. The SQL Server trial
version can be found at
