installing office 2003 on machine that has office2000

S

Sissi

My computer crashed, my sister gave me her laptop but it has office 2000 and
i want to install office 2003. question (1) when I install 2003 will it
automatically transfer all the outlook, word information that is in 2000.
(2) I think I still have 2 free helps from microsoft but they asked for the
Product Identification Number which I can't get as my computer collapsed. I
have the 2003 software with the Product Key but I gather I can't get the PIN
until I install it.

Can someone please help. Thank you

thank you for your answer Milly........i'm backed up on Mozy. I'm so

installation of 2003 over ride 2000?

Any idea on the Product ID number?

An in-place upgrade should pick up all of your settings and files.
Having said that is it always advisable to backup your important files to
another drive. To backup Outlook, close Outlook completely and copy the
.pst file to another place such as a second hard drive or a USB stick.

When you install 2003 you will be given the choice of overwriting
(installing over) the previous version or doing a parallel install (keeping
the 2000 version and install 2003 beside it.) If your sister wants 2000 on
her laptop I would recommend a parallel install. If she doesn't care, let
the installation program overwrite the previous version. Also, don't forget
to update the 2003 programs to the latest service pack, located:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...49-3E13-433B-B9D2-5E3C1132F206&displaylang=en

The Product ID will be listed on the Help About once the program is

As a note, with a parallel installation, Outlook 2003 will not install
whilst Outlook 2000 remains on the PC - only a single instance of outlook
can be installed.
If you upgrade the entire office installation to office 2003 there are some
other hoops to go through with outlook 2003.

Actually, Outlook 2003 will install on a computer with a prior version of Office/Outlook.

Only Outlook 2007 requires that previous versions be uninstalled prior to installing.

I'm so impressed with your knowledge and your kindness in answering. Some
day maybe I can help someone. But today I have another question. I read
somewhere that I can isolate a 2000 program and it will stay on the computer.
My sister needs her Access (so she says) and it is not on my Office2003
Student and Teacher Edition that I want to install. (a) is it true you can
keep one program from a previous edition and (b) Am I getting in over my head
and had just best get 2003 on and then worry about Access?
If I am in over my head since I have MOZY and have Access backed up can I
just buy the Access program separately?
Thank you for your answers. Sissi

Upgrading Office will only upgrade/replace the components included in the
version you are installing, so Access will remain, and function.
Ensure you have run Office update, before you install the later version
