Installing Office 97 on a new computer

S

Shelly Lamberth

I recently purchased a new computer. I was using Office
97 on my old computer. I want to install Office 97 on my
new computer. During installation I receive an error
message that the installation failed because the Office
97 CD is an upgrade version. How can I install the Office
97 on my new computer?

Shelly Lamberth,
To install your Office 97 you will need the qualifying product (previous
Office version) you used to install it on your old machine.

if you haven't got one, then Lotus Smartsuite is a qualifying product, and
you can pick that up for under £10 on Ebay........

Sorry, Gordon, but in order to be in compliance with the EULA it must be the
*ORIGINAL* qualifying product. You see, when you use a product to qualify
for an upgrade the licence is then assimilated into the upgrade licence and
they are inseperable - the QP cannot then be sold, given away or otherwise
transferred to a third party. If the OP has no longer got the original
product then they are required to repurchase Office (97 is a QP for 2003).

But surely that doesn't apply if the OP is going to use a NON-Microsoft
qualifying product? How can the licence be absorbed if it's not an MS one?

You're missing the point. They used a product to qualify for the 97 upgrade
originally, right? If they no longer have /that/ product then the 97 upgrade
licence is null and void and they must repurchase Office. IOW, no other
product can be used to qualify other than the one that was used originally.
So, if they used Office 95 to qualify, then they must always use Office 95.

Is that any clearer?

Your information may be 'clear' but it's not entirely correct.

Office 97 could use not only prior Office versions as an upgrade
qualifier it could also use competitive product upgrades and no
requirement exists where the 'other' product becomes part of
Office 97. The requirement is only that you have the media
for a qualifying product when you run Office 97.

You can install an Office 97 upgrade edition CD using any of
the qualifying products media listed in this article.
