And I buy a new computer.
Can I then Install Office again on the new computer.
How do I de-activate MS-Office on a Lost / Stolen or dead computer?

1) If the copy of Office was OEM, then it was stolen with the
computer. If it was not OEM, when it comes time to activate it, you
probably will need to call MS and explain and they'll activate it.

2) Read the EULA for your version of Office. Some versions will and
some will not let you install on your desktop and laptop.

That would depend on the licence. If it's OEM (i.e. it either came with the
computer, or it was purchased with an item of hardware and then installed on
the system and activated) then you cannot as the licence is forever tied to
the *FIRST* computer it was installed and activated on. If the system dies,
or is otherwise decommissioned, then the licence is rendered void. Read the
EULA.

You don't. There's no such thing as deactivation. If your licence allows
transferral, you simply install on the new system and, depending on how long
the last activation took place, you may need to activate by phone.

Again, that would depend on the terms of the licence: -

1) OEM - no (see above)
2) Office XP Students and Teachers Edition - no. One licence per system.
3) Office retail - depends on the licence, but generally, yes, provided
that

a) The system is for the exclusive use of the licensee (i.e. you)
b) The systems will not be in use simultaneously.

4) Office 2003 STE - installation on up to three systems of any type and
in any combination.

For precise details, read the EULA.

This may be a silly question, but...
Bearing in mind that most versions of Off ice now have all the documentation
on the CD (including the EULA), how can someone read it without installing
it?

You can read something on a CD without installing the application! Simply
search the CD for a text file (I believe it may be called something obviousl
like eula.txt).

You can as answered elsewhere. That's not the major problem, the major
problem is that you must open the package in order to read the EULA and
if you disagree with the EULA you're told to return the software for a
refund.

Returning software that has been opened is quite a trick!

Why can't software companies put the EULA on the exterior of the
package OR put a URL on the exterior of the package that will point to
the EULA on the companies website?

Thanks for the info.

Seems like buying OEM software is not really a good deal.
Especially if you don't get a big discount from retail.

So I decided to cancel the software order from the hardware order and
buy it seprately.

Thanks again,
Kelly
