Installing Office Professional 2003 on two computers

On June 9th my wife and I purchased the MS Office Professional Edition 2003
Upgrade (upgrading from MS Office Professional 2000) for our home desktop
computer. My mother-in-law and I are going to get my wife a long-desired
notebook computer for Christmas and I need to know if I can install the same
software on it or are we required to purchase the software a second time (or
maybe a software license).

You can install it on a PC and a Notebook for use by the same user.
See the EULA for specific information:

I have office 2003 professional and have installed it on a few computers. I
am trying to install on my daughters but it keeps saying that the product key
is not valid. I have tried many times and still get the same answer. Why?
Does it have to be under my name, the original user??

As Tom said, it can be installed on a desktop and a portable used by the *same* user. What you are trying to do is a violation of the License.
