Installing Office Svc Pack 3 without CD - W2000 Pro

I cannot find a way to install the (badly needed) Office Service Pack 3 on
my laptop, which runs Windows 2000 Pro. Part way through the SP3 download,
it stops to ask for the Office CD. However, I do not have it -- that
software was installed under a license from my former employer, perhaps
downloaded from our server.

This has become critical because I have begun to get random error messages
from installed Office components, and especially because I have come to
understand that I must have SP3 installed in order to configure Outlook (NOT
Outlook Express) to work with Hotmail, my new e-mail provider. Any help
would be very much appreciated. Thank you,

Hi Amy,

You didn't mention if this is Office XP or
Office 2000 (each has its own SP3)

The MS Installer software expects to always have
access to the original installation source.
While you can try to use the 'fullfile' (admin)
version of the updates,
http://microsoft.com/office/orkarchive/xpupdt.htm
there is no guarantee
that it won't ask for the CD as well, especially
if it detects a problem with your current setup.
If a problem is detected it will ask for the CD
to try to correct it and adding a Service Pack
may not be a cure for all errors you're encountering.

Hello Bob,

Thanks v. much for this attempt to help. I aopologize that I did not
initially include my Office release -- it is Office 2000. Your message link
sounds like a good idea, but it is for XP. However, you have now steered me
to the Admin area of the MS Office pages, so perhaps there is an equivalent
for Office 2000 there. I will look.

Last week I went ahead and prchased a copy of Outlook 2003, in the hope that
it will permit me to convert my Hotmail e-mail account to an Outlook
interface, without downloading the SP3 update. I have not installed it yet,
though, bcs I am a bit wary. I gather from this forum that it can be
problematic when different versions of Office programs coexist on one
computer. Any wisdom to offer about this? Your advice would be welcome.

Thanks again, Amy
