Installing Office X on a new computer from an upgrade disk

Hi,

I'm looking for some suggestions. I just bought a new iMac and would
like to install my copy of Office on it. The problem I have is that
the Office X installation disk that I have is an upgrade disk. After
installing, the computer asks me to Browse to my original
installation. The problem with that is that I can't find the original
Office 2001 disks that I had. Any suggestions on how to move my copy
of the software from one computer to the other? Can I use the
migration assistant to just move that one set of programs (I don't
want to use it to move everything from the old computer)? Or, can I
use a FireWire to move the software manually from one computer to the
other? I don't have the original Office 2001 programs on the old
computer either. But, I may have it on an even older computer I have
in my office. Can I connect a G4 running OS9 to my Intel iMac running
OS X 10.4? If so, will I be able to verify my installation that way?

Any ideas about how to get support from Microsoft on this (for less
than it would cost to upgrade)?

And, if there is no way to get the software across, can I buy an
upgrade to Office 2004 and use my Office X upgrade CD as proof that I
owned a prior version? Or, am I stuck buying a brand new copy?

Thanks in advance!!!

You have a brand new computer. Why would you want to install "end of life"
software. Office X will no longer be supported. Entourage was not updated
for the new Daylight Saving Time.

You could use Firewire to drag over the Office folder, but you will need the
CD key when you launch Office. You could also drag over the Microsoft
preferences. The CD Key is an invisible file, btw.

Good question. Because I need office since I receive tons of office
documents from clients, but don't want to pay for 2004 since 2008 will
be released in January and I'll have to pay again.

I have the product key that came with the Office X upgrade CD. Is that
what you mean by the CD Key or is there some other file I need to move
across?

Thanks!

You could contact Microsoft to get a replacement CD (if you have proof
of purchase):

Or, you could probably find an inexpensive Office 2001 CD, either online
(e.g., eBay), or perhaps even free to borrow at a user group, that you
could insert into your drive when you're asked to find the previous
version.

AFAIK, if you have your v.X CD, it will work to validate the 2004
upgrade.

I am in a very similar situation but I have the Office 2001 CD as well
the the Office X upgrade CD and still can't get past the upgrade
verification.

MS Word X would not start, it would crash just after the splash
window. I tried re-installing only Word X from the Office X upgrade
CD. It installed but no change, Word still crashes upon startup.

Next, I used the Office X upgrade CD to remove all of Office then
tried re-installing a fresh copy of the entire Office X suite from the
upgrade CD. I got hung up on when it asks for the Office 2001 folder
to upgrade. I didn't have Office 2001 on the computer but I do have
the CD (complete package, not an upgrade disc). So I went back to the
Office 2001 CD to install it but can't. I get an error saying Office
2001 is not supported on this model computer (Intel based iMac running
Mac 10.4.10).

I tried copying the Office 2001 folder from the CD to the desktop and
perform the upgrade as well as going through the Easy Install option.
The results are the same.

It does not seem that having the Office 2001 CD helps. I'm willing to
buy Office 2004 upgrade but concerned whether I'll still be stuck in
the same position I am now. I have no working copies of Office
installed.

Thanks,

I was able to get it to go. Not sure why I couldn't select the Office
2001 folder I copied onto my desktop. I tried everything again and
was able to select the Office 2001 folder to proceed with the upgrade.

Office X suite is now working. Sorry for the misdirection.

Glad you solved it. Just for the archives--previously people have
reported there is no need to attempt to install Office 2001 at all. You
can simply insert the Office 2001 CD and point the upgrade verification
at the CD itself.
