installing Office XP Pro update over Office Basic 2003

Newbie

I just purchased a new computer with Office Basic Edition 2003 installed. What I needed was Office XP Pro, for a class that I am taking online. The class will be using the 2002 version of Word, Excel, power point and access. Can I upgrade to the Professional Version from a later basic version 2003 ? If I do, will I be able to use the 2002 word, excel and power point or will it be 2003 ? do I just need to buy the Office XP Pro ( not the upgrade ) and remove the basic 2003, so that I am using the same programs as the school ? Help, classes start tomorrow.

Office XP will use only Office 2000 or 97 as upgrade eligible programs. I
would purchase Office XP full version.
