Installing Office XP Professional

Bob

I am trying to reinstall Office XP Professional on my laptop because it
became necessary for me to restore my hard drive. My copy of Office
2000 is an "Upgrade" version because I have a copy of Office 97.
Unfortunately I am a long way way from home and will be for another two
months. While I did think to bring with me my Office XP disks, I
failed to bring my copy of Office 97, so I am not able to reinstall my
upgrade version of Office XP software.

I had previously registered my Office XP version with Microsoft on the
same computer that I am now trying to re-install it on. I understand
Microsoft retrieves some kind of a fingerprint from your computer when
you register Office with them. Since I am trying to reinstall it on my
same computer, is there some workaround that I can do to accomplish the
install? Or is there somebody at Microsoft I can call to help with
this? I assume Microsoft can determine that it is the same computer
that I had previously sucessfully registered it on. I keep getting a
message to provide my copy of Office 97, which I do not currently have
access to.

I don't want to have to buy a copy of the latest Microsoft Office
software. I know all this copy protection stuff helps the software
providers, but it sure causes problems for legitimate users. Any help
will be greatly appreciated.

The only way to clean install an upgrade version
of Office XP Professional is to have the actual
qualifying Office 97 CD on hand to insert in
the CD drive when prompted to do so. There
are no workarounds other than to purchase a
"Full Version" of Microsoft Office. Since
you apparently do have the Office XP CD, you
could purchase an Upgrade Version of Microsoft
Office 2003.
