Installing Office XP SP3

D

Dale

I downloaded the full file version Office XP service pack
because I don't have a disc for the original Office XP
Small Business that I use. It still won't install,
telling me I have to install the CD. Also, I cannot
access my excel files without it telling me I need the CD.

What do I need to do? Thanks.

What promise are you talking about? The instructions for the full-file
version say:

"Note: Some users will still be prompted for the original CD when using
the Office XP SP3 Full File Version, depending on your installation of
Office XP. For more information, please see the Microsoft Knowledge Base
article, (828451) OFFXP: Why Service Packs, Updates, and Security
Patches May Require the Office XP CD-ROM."

As stated in http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=832671 "Description of
Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 3":

"After you install the update, you cannot remove it. To revert to an
installation before the update was installed, you must remove Office XP,
and then install it again from the original CD-ROM."

Because there is no "uninstall" built into this service pack (or any
other Office service pack), it was not possible to automatically roll
back to the previous state when you terminated the installation
prematurely. Not having the CD will continue to be a problem whenever
you need to update Office, add/remove Office features, or
reinstall/uninstall Office. BTW, you still haven't said what promise
you were talking about.

Hi!

Thanks for the explanation. It seems to me, anyway that this is a nasty bug.
Letting people with no access to Excel, is not good at all (notice that no
other office application is damaged). Any idea how to fix that? My CD is
really scratched, and I cannot use it to install again. Or will upgrading to
Office 2003 do the trick? I need to fix it. If there is no uninstall, it
should be warned about this, or check for CD presence before touching any
file. It should say "warning, if this fails, excel will be unusable" :D

Regarding the promise, I maybe expressed myself wrong (non-native english
speaker) i was refering to the fact that they tell that your reward for
downloading the big file is not having to use the CD. If this is not
true...why bothering to get the big file?

Thanks.
