Installing Office97 updates on W98 system

dec

Hi,

I recently acquired a computer - relatively old; running Win 98 (not SE).
Office 97 is installed. I've downloaded all the Windows security updates
etc., plus have also (or attempted to) downloaded Office 97 updates. They
will not install.

1) Office 97 Service Release 1 (released July 1998). Downloaded & installed
fine.

2) Microsoft Office 97 SR-2b. Downloaded the install, it runs (extracts) but
it does not install the update. It gives error "The MS Office 97 SR-2 patch
cannot be applied ... either Office 97 is not present (it is) or there are
multiple versions of O' 97 on this computer (there aren't). Try installing O'
97 or running the latest SR-1 patch to correct the prob. Or, contact MS Tech
Support..."

3) Office 97 Unique Ident. patch - requires SR2
4) ODBC Driver vulnerability - ditto.

N.B Re-installing Office/Windows, formatting HD etc is not an option for me.
Office (Word etc) otherwise works fine.

Thank you in advance for any help!

Hi Dec,

There are a couple of things that can cause this, including
a broken setup set on the PC. See if the information here helps:
