my wife purchased office xp pro. version 2002 and had it installed on her
laptop. 2 years later now, the laptop is having problems so she bought a new
laptop and tried to install the program on her new laptop. it keeps popping
up product key allready in use. isnt there a way to be able to install it on
a second computer w/o having to purchase it again?

Assuming it is a retail copy of Office, use the telephone activation option
and explain the situation.

If it's an OEM edition (check for the letters 'OEM' in the product key of Help=>About in Word) then it's licensed to the machine
rather than to the user. Retail copies allow a 2nd install and activation or moving from an old to new computer.

If it's not an OEM edition use the telephone activation method to explain the situation to one of the activation folks.
