INSTALLING OUTLOOK ON WINDOWS XP?

R

RHINO

I HAVE A LAPTOP WITH OFFICE 97. I WOULD LIKE TO INSTALL IT ON MY NEW DESKTOP
THAT HAS WINDOWS XP. I AM CURRENTLY USING OUTLOOK 2003 ON MY NEW COMPUTER,
AND IT WORKS GREAT. I JUST DID NOT KNOW IF THE OLDER VERSION WOULD BE
COMPATIBLE, CAUSE PROBLEMS, OR EFFECT MY NEWER VERSION OF OUTLOOK. ARE THER
ANY SPEACIAL THINGS I NEED TO DO TO INSTALL, UPDATES, PROCEDURES, ETC? ANY
HELP OR ADVICE WOULD BE GREAT.

Please unlock you Caps Lock key to avoid yelling.

You cannot have two versions of Outlook installed at the same time.

You can install Office 97 using the custom installation and install all
applications except Outlook. The usual recommendation is to install the
older versions of Office first. May not apply in your case where only
Outlook is post Office 97. Once you install Office 97 you can obtain
updates here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.asp?LangID=20&LangDIR=EN-US . You
can also obtain the updates from links on the Office Update Site:
http://office.microsoft.com/officeupdate/default.aspx . However, you must
use the links to updates to prior version not the Office update link which
requires Office 2000 or later.

If you laptop came preinstalled with Office 97, you have an OEM version
which you may not be able to install in your new computer. If you have an
OEM version and have a Office 97 CD, you should be able to use the CD as a
qualifying product for Office 2003. If you do, first uninstall the Outlook
2003 you are currently using. I am somewhat unsure here as the technology
for preventing OEM version from being installed on other computers has
improved over the years.

If you Office 97 is a retail upgrade version, you will need an Office 97
qualifying product to install. You need to consider both the qualifying
product name and version. For example, Works is a qualifying product for
Office 97 only if the Works versions predates the release of Office 97.

You may have a qualifying product on your computer for Office 2003 upgrade.
Go here: http://www.microsoft.com/office/editions/howtobuy/default.mspx

Check the edition of Office 2003 you have an interest in using and click on
it to check upgrade eligibility.

IMO, any way you can afford and get to Office 2003 is better than Office 97.
