Installing Patch

E

Elizabeth Franks

For the past week I have been getting an email
from "Microsoft" with the following message:
Subject: Use this patch immediately!
Message: Dear Friend, use this Internet Explorer patch
now! There are dangerous virus in the Internet now! More
than 500,000 already infected.

I am on the Windows 2000 operating system. Please advise
if this is bad information and if so what I can do to stop
the message from coming through on my system.

Thanks
Elizabeth Franks

Assuming the email also has an attachment....delete the message...and update
your virus scanner. Microsoft NEVER sends updates via email. Microsoft
sometimes send emails advising you to install a patch (if you have opted for
emails of this nature), but these emails generally refer to a technical
article on Microsoft's web site with advice on how to install the
patch...the email will not have an attachment. If you run Windows Update
periodically (or have it install updates automatically), you'll be up to
date in respect to patches and have less headaches.

BTW...this NG is for Microsoft Access...the database product. You might
want to post questions of this nature to a more appropriate NG.
